A new face enters the crowd

Hi everybody!

My name is Dan. Im a 20 year old guy who lives in Denmark, and ive been doing magic seriously for some 1½ years now.

Ive always been fascinated by magic, even when i was a little kid. First time i saw it, was back when David Copperfield made his TV special, and since then i have promised myself to find the secret to every single magic trick.

However, it wasn't until last year i stumbled upon a site where i could actually learn the real magic. Sure, i've read the tricks in the books at the library, and ive made a coin disappear in a handkerchief using a bit of gum, but thats now *real magic*. Now, after ive spent thousands of dollars in a very short time, i feel that im finally fulfilling my proclamation of learning the secrets of magic.

While i know a lot of tricks, either bought from sites or shared by other magicians, i find that i havent actually had much field experience. It seems i keep spending money just to learn the trick, i perform it by myself and maybe to some friends, but i rarely get myself out there and perform for strangers. Im sure its just a matter of confidence, and i've planned that next year will be the year i go out and try to make it as a magician in Denmark. Until then, its just practice, practice and more practice ;)

So, that was a quick note about me, and what i do. Ive joined the forum, hoping i can find other magicians to talk with, share ideas and the like - so lets see how that works out ;)

Actually it does - well, sort of!

It works on the principle that there are only a few basic magic methods which then get used in many different tricks and routines so it teaches those basics and leave you to develop them into all the other zillions of tricks! It's very tongue in cheek and it's really aimed at youngsters (which is why I can understand it) and I keep meaning to do a review but never get round to it. I'll dig the book out at some point and see if I can expand a little more. It's available from Amazon.co.uk for £9.89 plus P&P, the general details are Hardcover: 128 pages Publisher: New Holland Publishers Ltd (1 Aug 2005) Language English ISBN: 1843309572
and the synopsis is:
You might be amazed to know that the thousands of magic tricks that have ever been performed are based on one or a combination of only nine basic effects. Mark Lemezma reveals these tricks of the trade with the use of easy-to-understand text and clear step-by-step photographs. Having guided you through these simple techniques, he goes on to show you how you can adapt them in a variety of ways to create a wealth of magical effects to wow friends, family and unsuspecting onlookers. The final section deals with card magic, offering a selection of amazing tricks based on a few essential principles. Every Magic Secret in the World Revealed is the only book you will ever need to become an accomplished magician.

Hmm well, im just a weee bit sceptic about that. Take a book series such as card collage. Thats around 1200 pages, explaining card tricks in detail, and even that book doesn't cover everything.

I understand the meaning that its only a few basic stuff that gets added on, but just off the top of my head, i can come up with a lot more than 9 basic stuff that is unique in magic. Not to say i dont belive you, but it cant cover everything :P

But alas, i might check it out some day ;)

thanks Paul for that book info..... that's one I've missed over time!

Whilst it may not cover EVERY nuance it will I'm sure reveal the basic moves from which all others originate. I wouldn't be too sceptical Helios until you've read it!! Even I can see that a helluva lot of effects originate from the same moves just administered differently. I think this is a book that will at least open the eyes and enable you to trace back to these the moves that are being used today.

One for the CUPS list me thinks
