Hi Airamas,

Welcome! I suppose the idea of having the spectators feel like kids again is not part of your aim  Anyway I think I understand where you are comming from, though for me the issue is not about "age" but about "attitude".

I am very plesead that many of the great magicians besides being excellent performers, also seem to have a great interest in the history of the topic.

I - like many magicians - like to create my own effects and routines.
However, usually very little new is under the sun, and the elements of our ideas as well as of most other modern effects are usually quite old. Often the original ideas has been refined and improved by many of the great masters.

To be a serious magician requires in my mind general knowledge of (or at least interest in) how key ideas and techniques developed. Usually a 15 year old will lack this type of knowledge, however fundamentally it is not about age, but about attitude.

Out of 100 15 yr old magicians, and out of 100 45 yr old magicians only a small minority seems to care about the great masters influence and contribution to the ideas!

I care about this! A non caring 45yr old is a lost case, while a non caring 15yr might easily change attitude and soon become a serious and knowledgeble magician!! Thus please take the kids serious and try to teach them the right attitude!

Magic is slight of mind!

Tomo asked: Have you ever worked as a reader? This is something that has generated great controversy on the board over the past few months, so it'd be nice to get a fresh perspective from a new voice - that's if you have experience of that "grey" area. There's much opinion and not enough fact, if you see what I mean.

My feelings about this are quite clear. If one is ENTERTAINING the public then to use any means at there disposal is an acceptable display of art.

To perform as a psychic convincingly one most think themselves psychic.

Just as the actor playing a part of a magician would do well to be amazed by his own miracles, so to must the psychic entertainer be in awe of his abilities.

However if one is CONING the public in an attempt to STEAL form them, then there actions are not only criminal but contemptible as well.

The grey areas seem to be in things like readings and mediumism or channeling.

There are those who argue that the reader and the medium provide comfort or positive encouragement to those they work for, and so what is the problem with charging money for such a services?

Well the question becomes one of context. Do those your working for believe that you are psychic because you say you are? Or do they come to there own conclusions, something you have no control over?

The later in my opinion is acceptable while making false claims is not.

Now I know that as magicians you will say but Airamas is not deception our business? And my answer is a definitive yes. However in most cases those we work for KNOW we are deceiving them and so long as we don't say we are psychic we have not made false claims. This has always been the way I have chosen to handle the situation. I have done readings as a person who wants to help you to figure things out for yourself. Get it?

A very good work on this subject is Kenton Kneppers Wonder Readings.

Anyway that’s how I feel. Thanks for asking.

PS I'm not sure why the quote button doesn’t work for me? Maybe it's voodoo. LOL

LOL yes, probably. I think your opinion is probably the most morally correct on the subject of readings, if an opinion can be correct that is. Anyway, I agree with you.

I also agree with Soren Riis about 'age' and 'attitude'. And no, I'm not just saying that because I am 15.

Anywho, Hi Airamas and welcome!

Hello Airamas

Welcome to talkmagic.

You Remind me of Craig Browning and The Rev Mark Lewis
Both of who I have a lot of respect for.

I am master of misdirection, look over there.

We are not falling out young Welshy, we are debating, I think farlsy is an idiot he thinks I am one. We are just talking about who is the bigger idiot.

Umm, Hey. Hope you wont judge the book by its cover with the younger generation of people on this forum though.

I'm sure you'll enjoy the forum as everyone helps pretty much everyone here :D

Welcome Airamas,

I understand what you're saying in your original post, though, there are a few things that I might disagree with - though, I suspect these may be semantic differences and likely not worth junking up a welcome post. However, it might be an interesting chat to have sometime.

As to your psychic post, it reminded me of a line I've read in some magic text, but I cannot recall which currently: "The relationship between a spectator and illusionist is best described as a mutual contract of deception, in which the spectator agrees to be deceived, and the illusionist agrees to use this power responsibly" or something near that.

How are you liking Nebraska? There isn't much of a magic community around here that I've stumbled upon, and only one magic-dedicated shop I've been able to find. The other "shop" is a small corner within another establishment.

Welcome again,
-Tyler

Hello there and welcome to TM (I think).
We can all have bad days and the day you joined TM, was obviously one of your bad days. I don't believe you are this grumpy every single day.
But I guess by doing this, you attracted the attention and the replies of all the under 15 year olds in the forum :)
Best greetings from Iceland!

I can assure your that my mood was temperate and my words congenial on the day I posted my intro.

I also had no way of knowing who would or wouldn't respond? [I am however happy for the responses I have received.]

I am very "grumpy" all the time. LOL Dress warmly out there in Iceland I wouldn't want you to catch cold.

I am also grumpy and actually on a somewhat permanent basis. Welcome to the club.

From your first post I knew instinctively you were a mentalist. I am not sure how I knew but I knew. Of course I have worked as a professional psychic so that may have something to do with it. I was very pleased with myself when you confirmed my intuitive powers on a subsequent post. Of course a more sceptical person would say that mentalists have a certain way of expressing themselves which gives the game away somewhat.

Reverend Craig Browning (yes he is a psychic reverend too) and I have been mentioned on this thread and allusion has been made that you remind the poster of us.

However there is one difference and I say this with the tact and diplomacy that I am renowned for. Everyone knows exactly who we both are. Neither of us hide our real names unless we happen to have been banned from some forum or other.

I think perhaps it would be helpful if you were to give us some clue as to who we are all dealing with. If someone has controversial or outspoken opinions I think it is a good thing to be able to show the courage of your convictions and say exactly who you are.

Just a suggestion.

Airamas, you had "titilated" us with your strong attitudes to things magic.

this post had such great potential... then seemed to "fizzle out" almost as quickly as it started, just as Mark asked that the "mask" be removed.

shame that.

I'm also a fifteen year old. I realize that there is a lot to learn from the more experienced in magic such as you, and that is why I joined. Please don't hate me... :)
