smoke by Derren Brown

Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music. - Kristian Wilson, Nintendo, Inc, 1989..

You can learn the effect in the book, or the DVD... however, you possibly won't be able to perform it straight away.

Can't say much more.

No. Pure Effect is a book in it's own right.

Sorry, the purpose of this site is that magicians talk and exchange ideas, have fun, write reviews and maybe recomend each other to get hold of certain effects and routines. This site is not for revealing magic secrets!

Some treads are essentially a question about a certain effect xxx is done.
And this question is then answered! Of course this happens in a slighltly subtle way! Instead of asking how an effect is done, the person askes like in this thread what is the name of an effect. Other time the question is about the name of a slight etc. However I often get the distinct feeling that the question really is about "how the heck" did the magician do that.

Darren Browns routine is a very nice presentational plot based on a well know principle. I could give more a more specific reference, but I have now got the the point where I feel that the information I provide most often is given to people who mainly are interested in "how its done" rather than to extend (or build up) an existing act that have helped (is going to help) feed their family.

Lots of us are not full time proffesionals and some of us are amatures. I am very plaesed that many on TM has a very serious attitude to magic, however I do think we should guard the magic secrets and make sure that people we usually perform for, are prevented from just signing in at TM and essentially get hold of magical secrets.

Magic is slight of mind!

I think that it's a fair enough question for someone who sees a trick they like to ask what it's called and any books that teach that trick.

I agree that freely giving out secrets is wrong, but providing information that will allow someone to go away, buy the book and learn the trick shouldn't be a problem.

There are plenty of references and comments on Devil's Picture Book elsewhere if you'd like to check it out but it's an excellent investment in terms of entertainment and instruction.

Totally agree - TheGurkha simply wanted to know what it was called; there was no sense of asking how it was done.

Well I would like to learn this trick, but in turn, i had to find out the name of it, befor i could learn it! and of course, sour=ce the book where i would learn it! (i dont claim myself to be rich enough to buy every single card book out there!) I would have thought anyone asking 'what is this trick called' is intending on learning the trick, adn obviously, giving credit to the person that invented it. (when I can remember who's it is!)

thank you for you opinions. and i would never ask how to do a trick, i prefere sourceing the info for myself, but as I said, its quite hard when I dont know the name!
