On reflection, this character thing is probably most important in the marketing aspect of magic. You might have an interesting character, but if we are talking about entertaining the same set of people 45min non-stop, I think choice of varied material combined with a interesting level of spectator involvement is by far the most important issue. The basic technique of holding the attention of an audience is not new to me, and in fact required every time i lecture. To keep the attention of 200 students for 2 hours requires not so much character, but rather that the choice of material is interesting and presented in the right manner.

I do not get an inferiosity complex from knowing that Mark Lewis can speak 45 min non-stop. My wife can do that to  The Jumbo card manipulater gave me some things to think about, but thats a different issue..

Magic is slight of mind!

Our company hosted a web seminar before xmas, and as principal speaker, I had almost 40 minutes to fill.

It was almost as nerve wracking as my Groom's speech—which lasted 20 mins... but I have to say that 10 minutes into my webtalk I sank into a 'persona' and suddenly realised I had 50 rather interested and absorbed faces staring back at me, which made the rest of the session go very quickly and smoothly.

It was commented by my colleagues that I was 'acting the part', and perhaps that relates to this conversation.

Mainly, because I felt I was being myself, and the fact that I had caught the audience's attention by doing a 'pop quiz' as an intro.

It was very well planned, and yet I found myself ad-libbing and just being me for about half of it. Which was great.

And even nicer, I got a fantastic round of applause.

Dunno what I'm trying to say, but I felt it was relevant.
