DERREN BROWN...knows what your thinking???

Postby comfortablynumb » Jan 10th, '07, 21:50

Ive seen derren brown live perfrom this mentalism effect loads of times And i want to know how he does it (well i want to know where i can buy the secret!!!)
The effect is...He asks for a volenteer (not a stooge!) from the audience. he then asks them to. think of a partners name they first had a crush on. he then gives a load of psyco babble, takes a pen and paper then writes the name of the person the volenteer was thinking about on the paper. and he ALWAYS get it right! I KNOW FOR A FACT HE DOESNT USE STOOGES ON THIS EFFECT. I know that he has used stooges in the past for alot of his routines but not for this one!
does anyone know where I can buy or get knowledge on how to do this effect.
Darren sometimes puts his volenteer in a hypnotic trance before hand. but i know that has nothing to do with this effect, its simply for presentation

Cheers

Ok... It's really easy.

First off, go to this link and read the information there carefully ALL OF IT... That way you'll have a grip on the basics as to how things are done.

http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic11429.php

Once you've done that, invest the next 15-20 years of your life actually experimenting and learning about how to actually perform the "tricks" such as how psychology works, how to use words and even how you say them "right" will help you manipulate others... this is one of the big secrets to becoming a real Mentalist, like Derren.

Somewhere in the midst of this physical study, practice and actually SPENDING MONEY TO LEARN IT ALL, you will catch on as to why real magicians and mentalist only share their secrets when people pay a hell of a lot of money at times, to learn them... sometimes it's tens of thousands of dollars, which is the real reason as to why we don't just openly share our knowledge with shmucks that are too damned lazy or cheap to actually knuckle down and learn something...

SO NOW YOU KNOW HOW IT WORKS AND HOW YOU CAN DO IT YOURSELF.

No, for that effect Derren does not use stoodges and he need never have spoken to the person. The person never wrote anyting down and none of Derrens friends need to have talked with the person, yet what you see is pretty much how you decribe it. I am sorry but this forum is not for reveiling secrets, but if you are interested in magic and mentalism and seriously begins to study it, I am sure that eventually you will know how what for example "dual reality" is and how effects like the one you decribe can be achieved. The effect you decribe appears on one of his DVDs where he describe many of the effects. Derren does not give explanation on the effect you mension, however I think most mentalist watching the DVD will recognise the method.

Magic is slight of mind!

First off, it's 'Derren', not 'Darren'. secondly:

rigging stooges WOULD be hard, especially for someone with such a status as Derren Brown, imagine HOW MANY people he has included in his acts over the years, now imagine if ONE of those hundreds stepped forwards and 'dished the dirt' Derren would lose EVERYTHING and have to get a job in McDonald's (maybe guessing what people want to order?). IF, and i say 'IF' he uses stooges/actors he would have to pay them a substantial amount to keep them 'shut'. now times that substantial amount by however many hundreds of people he has come in contact with.... I don't think ANY illusionist or magician could afford that. Derren Brown is a legend, everything he does is 'genuine' and with such talent, he would never need stooges.

oh yeah, is he would hire 'actors', then why did he use his production crew for his 'Zombie' routine???!!! :?

It's a totally irrelevant point i know, but I'm incredibly anal, sue me. The original post refers to Derren's "Something Wicked This Way Comes" opening and closing to his kurotsuke routine Soren, stuff is written by the spectator here and ascertained in a fairly traditional, if slightly more pricey than the norm fashion, as opposed to the dual reality routine "reminiscence" from the dvd. Utterly pointless detail, i admit, but the pencils on my desk all face the same way at the same angle, i like things neat and clear:).

I agree with the sentiments expressed in response to the original post but in situations like this i often wonder how fair the reactions are, unless of course comfortably numb is a known character, my reasoning being that based on the way the post is written i would estimate his age at 12-16, not an age group expected to ask intelligent well thought out questions.

I also wanted to post here because i read this phrase:
"becoming a real mentalist, like Derren"
in a Craig Browning post.

Go Craig, you said something nice about the UK'S finest, have we switched to decaf? next you'll be starting posts without the traditional "Well if you listening to the festering tripe magicians will tell you....." (Insert whatever smiley indicates tongue in cheek here)

Derren even says in his book that he doesn't use stooges, as it would cost so much to keep them quiet and ruins the effect.

Well said, CutToTheAce. The effect from the show that the original post concerns does involve the volunteer writing down the surname of the person they had their first crush on. It is written on a clipboard, the sheet the volunteer writes on is torn off and put in his/her pocket. On a sidenote, this was how it was performed on the televised show over Christmas, too.

When I went to see the show, I think in 2005, the surname was written on a large piece of card (maybe it was a notepad) with a large felt-tipped pen, with Derren standing about 8 feet away, but not looking.

I hope this sorts any confusion woth regards to the effect in question.

come on be fair people, comfortablynumb did say
' does anyone know where I can buy or get knowledge on how to do this effect. '

He's willing to pay money for the effect so he's not just come here hunting for secrets.

Let's all be nice to each other :D

- my own extremely helpful post deleted due to ungrateful, pig-headed and ignorant response - see below -

No need for it, comfortablynumb, no need.

Just my tuppence, but the actual act of getting someone's 'private' mind thoughts is well covered in I. Noehitall's 'Books of Knowledge—the index'. Not a magic book as such, more a life-lesson in how to find things out.

The method describes going out and getting lots of books on subjects, and studying them. From simple things like 'how does a fuel injection system work', all the way up to 'quantum physics and the big bang'.

In fact, the 'index' can help with just about anything, and describes lots of places you can find books too.

So, if you're prepared to invest a little time and money, have a search for mentalism books, or read Craig's excellent post.

It seems obvious I know, but I am sure Mr. Noehitall has made a fortune out of this.

You know what!!! Theres alot of members on this site with a bad attitude!
I posted the question as i am really keen how to learn mentalism and magic. I thought I would get some informative answers. But a few posts where uncalled for! I didnt want anybody to reveal the secret, I just wanted some advice!!!! isnt what this forum is all about?? helping each other and sharing ideas etc.
with regards to the boring idiot (Text and unnecessary personal insults deleted by Mods - as we're sure you already know, you've just revealed a very bad attitude yourself - there was no need to stoop to such low comments. Whether you stay or go is your choice but such comments certainly won't be tolerated no matter what the circumstances.) I think its time to take my questions to a more informative forum.

THANKS TO THE PEOPLE WHOS POSTS WERE HELPFUL!!!

hmm - I'll do a bit of mentalism for you. I predict that this thread will be in the sin bin in the next hour - and I predict that you're not going to be too popular around here with an attitude like that..

My suggestion - don't just jump in asking questions, and seeing as you're new here - maybe have a bit of respect for the opinions of members who've been around a while. We all generally want to help each other - but we've also worked really hard at gaining some of the knowlege we have, and we expect you to as well..
