The 'Fearson' hookup, as it's been referred to, isn't uncommon, and I don't think it should be attributed to Fearson.
It's used in many effects, and suffice to say, it's not an 'anchored' hookup, it's a flexible and moveable one.
I think it's being referred to as Fearson's hookup as it's him who seems to have used it to effect in his floating cigarette and UFO trick.
I'm not too sure of it's origins, but it's definately something which crops up a lot in floating effects.
