Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

a description can be found HERE along with descriptions of many other false counts etc... a very good site for information

Tom, I just received The Web today and will have to work at it over the weekend. However, as good as this is or as good as it may be, it highlights one of my pet gripes!

Only after you open it do you see reference to the need for knowledge of false counts/shuffles/fiddles etc. The same applies to NFW!, Twisted Sisters, Double Back etc.

OK, this is perhaps to be expected but it would be very helpful (touch of heavy sarcasm there!!) if this information were displayed so that customers knew before buying. For instance, Revolution does mention that a Switch-A-Roo would be useful, some others indicate that a clean deck of cards is needed in addition to the props supplied to be able to perform the routine and many of the items on emagictricks are clear that other skills/items are needed. In the case of The Web the instructions enclosed don't even attempt to explain the move required - just do it OK?!

I'm sure others will have totally differing views in this respect but I feel that the manufacturers/authors have only supplied part of the routine so thanks to The Mog for finishing off what I reckon they ought to have done!

OK, I feel better now - having suffered complete computer breakdown here at work for 2 days, I was getting twitchy!

As it happens, (and I think it was The Mog that pointed this out initially), I believe that it works very well as a stand alone effect without the cards.

You tell the spectator that you are going to attempt to do some "voodoo" magic, and get them to hold a glass on the palm of one hand and then tell them to cover the top of the glass with the other hand, so that nothing can get in.

You will of course need to position their hand to bring it out in front of them a little bit

You then cover the glass/hands with a large silk and tell them that you will magically make something appear in the glass. With a quick "abracadabra" you whip off the silk to reveal...

oh, a still empty glass. bu**er!

You tell the spectator that it has always worked in the past, apologise and suggest that maybe it will work if the glass is up the other way.

Of course when they turn their hands up the other way it turns out it worked after all, just not in the glass.

(just don't use expensive glasses). :)

Thanks again to the mog for the general idea...

Since links have already been posted to online descriptions of this count I may as well put a bit in here. The essence of the move (without telling you to put your left middle finger between your right thumb and fore finger and then tie them in a knot trying to get the move right) is that you show the face card of a packet, then when you turn your hand back over, deal the back card onto the table, leaving the face card to be shown as many times as you want.

Hope this mini summary helps.

For anyone who is tempted to buy the McClintock twist video you will find the Orion Count on there, this is a flashy looking (and more deceiving) version of the flustration count.

Nick

Nick - those few words simplify things a great deal, many thanks to you and Bananafish for the help.

OK, I've spent a fair amount of time on this now and the count really isn't all that difficult - once you know what to do. In fact, that part of the instructions now make a lot more sense. It's a bit like flat pack furniture assembly instructions; the first read though makes as much sense as if they were written in Martian but once you've done it, they're easy peasy.

In this case, it was interesting to check out the two instruction links - one says don't do the count too often and the other says do it as much as you like! However, I still prefer Nick's explanation as it all fell into place once I'd read them. 8)

Once again only glad to be of assistance, even if only in a small way.

Er, I use a nice, thick green wax crayon - what colour do you use?

Which prompts the thought:

When the guy designing the drawing board made a mistake, what did he go back to?

And what was the best thing before sliced bread?

(Having had 2 week's R&R I'm back and the jokes are worse than ever!)
