Again Keith, check out Bob's Original handling for Chronologue. That's where you will the difference.

As soon as you know the date, you will have the card's name in a few seconds.

I am glad I noticed this thread as I am just about to start gaffing my diaries for this effect.

The version I have seen has been Bob Cassiday‘s from the DVD and wondered if you think its better for the choice cards to be CDHS and not just spades as I worry that it might be spotted.

Did that make Sense?

The explanation of having 7 decks shuffled and written in at random explains (ast least subliminaly) that the suits and cards will repeat.

You could for example have 3 ace of hearts appear on the same page. (Unlikely but not impossible)

This really comes down to audience management, and how guilty you look when you hand over the diary. Believe me if you don't seem concerned about what they see, they wont' be suspicious.

just to note, sorry if i didnt mention it in the review as such, but there's nothing stopping you not physically producing the card for this paul gordon version...just name it...

with this one, there's no dupes, just a simple piece of memory work to find out what the card is...

I really don't think it's a problem, FRK. Bob Cassidy pays a lot of attention to detail and if it caused difficulties, he'd have changed it. He has good reasons for structuring the effect the way he does.

Max Gordon is absolutely right.

There's no two ways around it - it does take ages.

I carried my diary around with me and did a month at a time. The Ultimate Mind Trip takes even longer because there's a lot more to write.

My favourite way to handle the effect is to bring out the pocket envelope with the chosen card in a pay envelope tucked in the back. This way the spectator can pick up the diary, find their number and open the envelope to reveal the card.

I'm not denying that this isn't a brilliant trick but there are tricks that get reactions just as good or even better than this trick. Personally I think you are better off spending your £15 on a book or Dvd which will teach you more.
Unless you are desperate for this trick and it is essential for holding up your routine then don't buy it.

By the way I saw him in Brighton with Mark Worgan and they were wicked.

The Gordon Diary Trick - Paul Gordon

Postby Paul Gordon » Jun 22nd, '07, 09:46

Dear All,

For those who like The Gordon Diary Trick, you might be interested in the following:

1) It was first published (early 90's) in The Card Magic of Paul Gordon and then in my 1996 book, Nocturnal Creations.

2) There is another use for it (bottle production kicker) in Vol. 2 of The Second 16th Card Book.

3) I use the diary, mostly, at weddings. I have the bride hold the diary and the groom shuffle the deck. She names the date they met, and I force the correct card on him. She checks the diary for the match! Strong handling...wedded bliss patter follows!

All the best, Paul Gordon

Hey all,

Just wanted to share another approach I have to this effect.

I combine the Diary presentation with Marc Oberon's Bang On.
So I explain how cards share some interesting similarities with the calendar. I then invite a spec to think of a special date in their mind. I then hand them a Diary that has cards entered in the dates (completely non-gimmicked) and instruct them to find their freely thought of date.
I then get them to reveal the date and it's significance followed by the card that is written against the date.
Then for those that know Bang On the rest should be obvious but for those that don't I would then remove my wallet, remove one envelope and inside is one card....their card.

What's cool about using something like Bang On other than that the fact any card can be named, therefore the Diary doesn't need any special set up other than cards written in each date but also no "deck" is involved which helps keep it more about the Diary and the prediction.

I'm not trying to say my way's better though. Just an alternate way.
Good use of Bang On! :)

Obviously Bang On is quite a costly investment for those that don't have it so my version would not be so easy to perform, especially as they are out of circulation.

But anyway, I digress. This is about the Diary effect.

Further to my postings some while ago now (February 2007. Do refer back) regarding Diary/card effects, I was pleased to see Paul Gordon has given magicians a link to a You Tube showing of his own marketed effect. I think his version is very good and certainly value for money when you consider you get the diary included in addition to the secret.

If you want to see another Diary effect then look at this link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OruoivNUbRQ I might as well be upfront and honest and admit that the performer in the clip is myself. It’s unlikely that any magician will be fooled by the method but it’s the presentation and entertainment value that count when working to the lay public. Originally I just made up from a standard bought pocket diary but several years ago I created a printed one on my PC which is not dependant on the year so it never dates. (No pun intended). The advantages are that the cards and the dates printed in the diary are bold and clear being so important in dim light often encountered in working conditions. The diary was made to fit nicely into a standard passport holder and that’s just about it.
