Certificate of Authenticity

Postby Magic_Drummer » Jan 24th, '07, 03:58

Hey Everyone, My brother just got back from the UK where he was playing in a big poker tournament and just for the hell of it I asked him to look for the book Pure Effect and he found it at a market on the street signed by Derren Brown himself, The old lady said that her son used to be an avid book collector and he had recently passed away, my brother didn't ask how...I feel kind of bad because my brother bought it for 9 pounds. This is the best find I have ever found...I was just wondering if I decided to sell it which I likely won't how would I go about getting a certificate of authenticity? He also got me a few other old magic books and one that is like an actual witch's book. Kinda creepy. What do you think. I've wrote derren and asked about it but he hasn't responded seeing as how I only just wrote him 2 hours ago. help would be appreciated.

I doubt that you will get a response but good luck anyway. It would appear to be a good find.

I would suspect that Derren would have autographed thousands of books in his time and one usually has to take these items at face value. After all, he's harly likely to remember that particular book is he?

a lot of celebreties, athletes etc have 2 versions of their signiture these days. one that they use for "free" signings for fans. it is accepted that these will be as prolific as they are difficult to prove authenticity.

the other version of their signature is specifically for items that will also have their authenticity confirmed, often by certificate, hologram, unique inks etc.

having 2 sigatures also helps to easily differentiate those more "common" signed items from the quantity controlled signed and authenticated items.

in other words, it may well be the sigature of Derren Brown, however it "may" be impossible to authenticate, plus it "may" also be the wrong version of his signature anyway and so worth little more than the face value of the signed item.

having said that, lets assume it's legit and therefore a great catch! well done.

Thanks, I gave him the name of the book collector who passed in case he oddly remembered specifically signing that book. I wonder how much an autographed Pure Effect sells for.

I doubt you'd get a certificate, most authors dont give them out. I've had a few books signed by various authors and never had any sort of certificate.

Oh well, I don't think I'll sell it if I can't get a certificate of Authenticity.

Call me crazy...

If you have a book, which is signed with a fake signature, what's to say a certificate—also signed—isn't a fake too?

Perhaps we could see a photo of this book's signed page? This may make it easier for someone to authenticate.

It won't sell? Your brother bought it, didn't he? So, certainly it will sell!

If you decide to sell it on, then you are ethically beholding to believe that it is real. There is no reason - absolutely none - for you to believe that this is not an authentic item. Therefore, your hands are clean and you may sell this item as authentic.

However, should proof be furnished that this item is not authentic, then you'll have to (legally) take the item back and refund the entire purchase price. Nevertheless, you'll not be afoul of legalities, since you sold the item in "good faith."

Intent, man, it's all intent.

Mike.

It's not that I don't believe it is real...but when buyers are looking for items such as this one they like to see a CAO even though many people just make fake ones, I think it will best be held in my hands for now as it only seems logical it is real...

You should mail his agent, he'll have loads of signatures.

Personally, I'd keep the book.

I may put it up as a buy it now for a high price that way if it doesn't sell I'm happy and if it does I'm extremely happy as well, How much would be a reasonable price to put it up as a buy it now for a signed Pure Effect?

I saw a signed copy on ebay with a by it now price of £160. That isn't to say that it will sell for that, but that's what they were asking for it.

Just search for completed items, you'll get a huge range of info.
