The Sorceror's Apprentice.

The BBC are launching a "reality" show for kids. They'll be taught to perform simple magic tricks and illusions and one poor little sod gets to be told he's rubbish and sent home each week.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/6299837.stm

It's being fronted by something like a cross between Cain Dingle and a Hobbit. They're backing it with a morning show detailing how to do simple tricks, so hopefully decks will become the new mobiles. I can't see them giving away something as difficult as a pass, but it's probably time to make your effects your own so some clever trousers doesn't rumble you by watching the show.

No doubt nutterdom is already working itself up into a self-important, Jesus-based rage at the idea of including Latin "spells" in the show. I can't wait!

The Sorcerer's Apprentice, which will air later this year, will show the children learning card tricks, Latin spells and illusions.
A lot of the kids I've seen recently can't even spell in English! Anyway, what have 'spells' to do with cards and illusions?

BBC executive Anne Gilchrist thinks the show will "inspire and amaze"
Oh goody - how perceptive of her.

The magic mentors will give away their secrets
Very good hearted of them!

I can hear all those letters being sent to Points of View already, 'Dear BBC, never in all my life.....' etc.

anything that gets kids involved and interested in magic has got to be a good thing. I'm all for it.

True. I watched last night's Charlie Brooker this morning and I think it might have coloured my reporting a tinsy little bit...

Courtesy of www.magicweek.co.uk:
The Sorcerer's Apprentice. From the BBC: "It's the beginning of an exciting magical journey for 14 lucky children. The Sorcerer – master magician Maximillian Somerset – is looking for an Apprentice and has hand-picked seven boys and seven girls to attend his magic school, where they will compete with each other for the title of The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Magic school is a huge manor set deep in the heart of the English countryside. For two weeks these boys and girls will eat, live and breathe magic at this enchanting boarding school, miles from home. The trainees must battle it out with one another, learning and performing a different magic trick every day. Presenter Barney Harwood follows every twist and turn of the Apprentices' journey over the gruelling fortnight. On arrival at their new school, the 14 spellbound children come face to face with The Sorcerer – whom they must impress. They are also introduced to the magic school rules by no-nonsense housemistress Miss Ford, and witness the mysteries of magic first hand. Magic teachers Mr Knight and Miss Evans will teach the budding Sorcerers the basics of magic. Before long, however, it's clear there are mountains to climb if the magic teachers are going to succeed in turning the lucky 14 into potential Apprentices." From Monday, July 9th

Oh it'll be just good fun to tie in with the latest Harry Potter release. They ain't going to give away any secrets that will spoil our work I'm sure - and anyway, as we all know, the magic ain't in the trick it's in...(all together now)...the presentation! And Hogwarts can't teach that.

Or can they...

Just watched a bit of this and it was what I thought it would be; kids exposing tricks through ineptitude. Not big time stuff of course, but it's a bit worrying what we might get to see as the series continues.

Also thought it was setting a bad example when the kids had to perform for the 'sorcerer' the day after learning their trick. Surely one of the first things you learn in magic is you need lots of practice before performing an effect?

Harry Potter...so much to answer for.

I've managed to see a few of these programmes (8am, BBC2!) and although I could quite cheerfully throttle some of the kids without a moment's hesitation, they're certainly being treated to some first class magic. This morning had Juliana Chen tipping the secrets of her seemingly endless card production and firing them in the air. OK, a lot of other 'secrets' are also being revealed but just the ones for the kids/sorcerees to learn and perform. Nothing which couldn't be gleaned from a Marvin's or other basic magic book. And as for Miss Evans running around with a rubber duck held in a pair of chopsticks…… ..

I like the show. The emphasis is definately more on performance than the tricks, which is a good thing.

Sorry I started another post on this, but will continue here.

I was just angry at the blatant exposure on this morning. And Cardtoon being presented as mentalism! Ha!
