Just to re-iterate: was this show a one-off, or part of a series???

I was assuming that if it were a serial, it may have got better with time.

If it was a pilot episode, I think it will die a pretty quick death.

Oh well.

I think I have read somewhere that there were more than one made, but they weren't intended to be shown all at once as in a series, so we may still see more yet - although I'm not convinced about them getting better.

I'll be honest here and say that I did actually enjoy the show, but I think it was more of a buzz from just getting to see some magic on mainstream tv. I don't have satellite or digital - so anything magic on tv is a bonus for me.

I personally wasn't worried much about the revelations - for example the rattle trick was as laughable as W. Heath Robinsons classic contraptions (and what a great artist he was - http://www.a.ghinn.btinternet.co.uk/heath.htm ).

Showing stuff like this is never a probelm, as this is how most people think magic is done anyway - really elaborate devious devices, and I think it is healthy for magic for people to believe in these mechanical props as it takes the heat off of the how the best (imho) magic is really done, ie simple sleight of hand or simple contraptions (such as TT or IET etc).

My main worry with a series of shows like SOM is that they will end up revealing the basic stuff, like the sacred TT, IET Raven etc. and consequently reveal 1000,000's of tricks. I don't want people to even be aware a TT exists let alone show it disappearing a silk, otherwise the first time I get a silk out people will look straight at my Thumb (thats what I do when I see someone else with a silk). Maybe I am just being a bit paranoid here.

On the whole I still think most people really do prefer to actually watch magic and be awed by it. Sure let them guess how its done, talking about it is good.

Put it like this, would the general public rather see a Houdini show, or a Show were H. does all his tricks and then explains how he did them?

In the first example they will say afterwards, "How the heck did he do that! That was bloody amazing! Wow, wait 'til I tell everyone"

in the second example "That was quite clever. What's for tea?"

(just my thoughts)

I have been informed that there are actually 5 scheduled Secrets of Magic - to be shown at various times.

I have also been told that Etienne Pradier (the coin guy from the show)( http://www.etiennefrog.co.uk/ ) will be appearing on British TV in his own right.

Check out the news section on

for an update on this event. I personally think The Magic Circle, is being a little harsh although I suppose they had nowhere else to go.

Well, there goes the image of the Magic Circle being a nice, comfy closed shop type of Society. At long last it has shown it has teeth and will use them. The performers must have known that they would be in line for some criticism or censure yet still went ahead. Perhaps the pay packets were a bigger attraction that the idea of keeping a secret or two. Perhaps the need for a swift cash input was very urgent. Or perhaps they just thought that revealing some stuff was OK if they then did something similar which was not explained.

Beware the Magic Circle Police - reveal too much and you can expect the knock on the door at 4.00am!

(The scene now changes to High Street, Anytown, UK and focuses on the house of Mandrake - he that is familiar with the Threatened Indian Revelations.

Dark and inconspicuous unmarked vehicles silently glide along the street and stop in precise formation outside the house. Equally silently, Officers from the elite MagiCircPol emerge and take up their positions. They are horribly beweaponed with steel shimmed Red and Blue Backed Bikes, Magic Wands, D'Lites and Lengths of rope which change colour and length at random. The secret Escapology Squad join them and check their array of handcuffs, chains and similar accoutrements.

The silence of the night is shattered harshly by a single voice amplified through a loud hailer:

'Come on out, Mandrake, we know you're in there.'

Sadly, all is in vain as Mandrake is a true mentalist and knew three days ago that this visit would take place. He gestured hypnotically and disappeared through his own orifice into the wastelands far away where none but the brave dare go. Or as we know it better, Shropshire!)

(Mandrake sticks tongue firmly in cheek and gestures hypnotically for no apparent reason)

Perhaps a certain other member, no names of course, should, change their signature to: Never underestimate the power of MagiCircPol!
