most influential magician?

Postby absolute » Jan 30th, '07, 20:26

as we all know, theres always one magicians presentation style, general reportoire(sp?) or personality that ends up becoming extremely influential towards our magic styles etc.

which magician(s) do u favour, admire or deem to have been influential towards Your magic progress?

i strongly feel gregory wilson's style of performance is what keeps me motivated. his sense of humour, high energy tricks and confidence trickster edge always seems to prouduce a brillaint performance. from what I have seen of him( card stunts dvd's, his on the spot DVD, and other small performances from the magic castle and so on), his performance are always top notch, and always seems to be one step ahead of the audience. so gregory wilson for me, easily without a doubt, is one of my favourite magicians. other opinions would be appreciated!

cheers

Well I'd have to say that personally the magician who influenced me the most was Paul Daniels. It was watching his TV shows when I was a kid that got me interested in magic in the first place. I was given his magic set one xmas and saved up my money to buy those little packs of Paul Daniels card tricks they used to sell.

If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be doing magic now.

I meet Gregory Wilson about 10 years ago in Copenhagen. He is endeed a very entertaining and good magician. He has been unlucky that he did not won the FISM world championship in card magic, but got silver twice!

While I was pretty much a beginner when I meet Gregory, he was very pleasent and I found him very approachable.

Chad Long was another very impressive magician I meet in the same convention (winner of Internationals magic competition in London the same year). Like Gregory, Chad was very approacheble.... For some reason we do not hear so much about Chad Long anymore, but he did a onehanded version of matrix (without cards) that was very impressive.

Magic is slight of mind!

In spite of Uncle Harry's instruction, James Mark Wilson continues to be my largest influence. Mark was the first magician I ever saw, his magic kit was the first I ever owned, and he remains to this day my friend and favorite magician.

Doug Hennig was the first magician I ever enjoyed and didn't find to be an arrogant SOB.

Jeff McBride is one of my favorite teachers of magic. Although my style of performing is nothing like his I like his phillosophy and that he encourages magi to study and incorporate other theatrical disiplnes into their performances.

I'd say David Copperfield is my favourite magician, but he gets supernatural help, so it'd be like cheating.

He employs occultists and is a satanist. If you don't believe me, suit yourself, but it's a known fact that he gets help from non human entities.

This topic has indeed been covered before.
Anyway, my favourites are Paul Harris and Gregory Wilson

Tommy Cooper is more a comedy guy than a magician to me and I don't like the fact that he 'accidentally' screws up tricks.

oops I missed this one, that make it 4 threads now.

Four's quite a poor number really.
Go on, I'm sure a search for David Copperfield will give you more.
