I have a small phone that plugs into my computer and I get crystal clear sound on Skpye. I use it for all my international calls. It is brilliant - and dirt cheap.
I also have a mobile skype phone that I can use at airports, etc. Some day I will figure how to use it with the house wifi. Go with Skype. It works.

I have a Philips Skype handset that does both normal phone calls and Skype calls. My phone on 3 also does the Skype thing, and damn well at that. And 3 even allows for Skypeout using Skype credit for international calls. Well worth it...

Does anyone happen to know what would happen if I bought a Skype mobile phone, put a 3 pay as you go sim card in and that phone was sent to someone in France: would they still be able to make and receive Skype to Skype calls for free in France? I'm not sure if essentially you'd have to connect to the internet and perhaps some international roaming charges would apply and defeat the whole point of free Skype calls.

Your knowledge would be much appreciated.

A 3 phone will only utilize the Skype on it's own network. That apparently includes international versions of the same network. But apparently the network doesn't exist in France. Apparently.

A smidgen of info here - http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=243721

However... If your friend in France has a computer and t'internet, they can call a Skype enabled 3 phone for no charge.

Thanks for that pointer DenmarkKilo. I'm hoping that a Skype handset (or any newish mobile phone seems to have Skype capability) could accomodate, say the French version of Vodafone, SFR, and the SIM card would work. I'm aware of computer Skype to Skype mobile calls, but would prefer if we were both on a phone.

Thanks again.
