Anyone know Latin?

Postby EckoZero » Feb 1st, '07, 15:45

I seem to remember from my younger days someone once said to me "Que Sera Sera Et Sic Semper Sera"
For those of you who dont know, this means (more or less) "what will be, will be, and it shall always be"

So anyway, I'm getting a tattoo soon and I want the Sic Semper Sera bit on there. So I was wondering if Sic Semper Sera was an accurate or certainly close translation for "And so it shall always be" (I know Sic is thus, but thus and so are very similar :D )

If anyone could help me out that would be spiffing!

You wont find much better anywhere and it's nothing - a rigmarole with a few bits of paper and lots of spiel. That is Mentalism

I can't help with the Latin but the first quote is also from the Italian 'Che sera sera'. Just don't let your tattooist inscribe you with "Sic semper tyrannis" which means "Thus it is with tyrants" as immortalised by John Wilkes Booth as he was busy shooting Abe Lincoln.

My brother speaks(well, knows) Latin, but all I know is 'Aurum Potestas est' Which means 'Gold is Power'. It all seems very complicated to me.

A tatoo isn't the kind of thinky you want to make a typo on.

Very bold!

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

I've got a book of how to swear in Latin here somewhere...

Ooo err!
No thanks :-P

Hmm, I knew Sic Semper Tyranis was "And thus always to tyrants" (I raher geekily used it to celebrate beating a boss on Resident Evil Code Veronica X once...) and I know that Sera is the "will be" be part of what will be, will be, so it should be right.

But then again knowing my luck I'll go have it permanently inked onto my arm only for some latin expert to come up to me and tell me I've got it wrong!

I knew that was going to come up!
Good books, but very sad if you read them. *sigh* Thus is the nature of teenage scrutiny.

Well I've prodded and poked about for ages now, and so far all my answers have concluded that Sic Semper Sera is certainly close enough to "so it shall always be" for me!

Hopefully getting the tattoo done next week, so maybe I'll be able to show you guys a picture fairly soon!

Very nice offer but it all depends on which bit of your anatomy is going to be tattooed :D !

I'm shocked and appalled Mandrake!

Well actually I'm not that shocked that it would come from you :P and I think it's fairly funny too, so I'm not that appalled

And you're alright, it's going on my arm. I think the left arm... obviously I cant draw freehand on paint very well, but here's the basic idea of it too!

I just thought I'd make sure it wasn't going to be on any bits normally covered when swimming or during similar activities  ! We look forward to the images of this work of art on your left arm. All black or in colour?

Well i need to have a chat with Steve the tattooist first, but I reckon it will all be monochrome, possibly shades of grey and black in there.
Not sure entirely how it will look, but I've been going through a rough time recently and it's taught me that

a) What will be, will be. And thats how it will always be
b) If you want something, you jump right in and ask questions later. You can't regret something you did. Only the things you didnt do!

And as a note to you all, this tattoo isn't just a "wow i should get a tattoo" idea. I've wanted a cross like that on my arm for just over a year now.
The latin is new, but I cant think of any point in my life when I wouldnt want to be reminded that stuff happens, and it will always happen and yu cant change any of it, so loosen up and just let it go :)
