Hi all,

I'm on the lookout for a small portable table for parlour shows.

I notice that some retailers sell tops and stands separately, and it's got me thinking:

Are these stands the same as microphone stands? Or at the very least, are the screw threads the same?

I'm asking because I have no shortage of mic stands, and would like to save myself some dosh if possible.

Michael Ammar once described making one out of a mike stand and a large picture frame with a rectangle of plywood in place of the glass. It might have been in his lecture notes fom Blackpool last year but it was certainly something well with the skills of most reasonably handy people.

the thread opn most tables is diferent to a mike stand thread but you can get a converter made up if you know a good metal turner.

its better to buy a base and top part and make your own table top, the base is usualy sturdier than a regular mike stand.

I have a table that uses a music stand as a base - not too sturdy, but it's portable. Drum/cymbal stands are probably the most sturdy - but being a drummer i can't get my head around wasting a cymbal stand for a table when it could be used for a cymbal
