Well I have been doing magic for about a year and a half now. I have always concentrated on street magic because i loved the closeness of all the tricks. I personally love skill tricks such as mannipulations and am not a big fan of gimmick tricks. I have done shows before, but am not really good with the giant shows because i don't know much stage magic. My friend asked me to do a GIANT show with another magician in about a month and a half (it is for a charity event to raise money for an animal shelter). I need a routine for stage magic in a very short amount of time, it will also be televised at my college so I want to be good. Any ideas on tricks that look spectacular on stage but are pretty easy to do would be wonderful. Nice to meet everyone =)

Welcome, but

You shouldnt have taken a job your not in the least prepared for. You dont have any effects, a routine, or expeirence in stage. Yet you want to have a great stage show in a short amount of time. I truely dont see that happening. This shows a lack of respect for the art, and ignorance on your behalf. I have seen people try to pull this kind of thing off and they end up looking bad, and making other magicians looking bad.
A lot goes into a show, lots of practice, seeing how the tricks flow for the routine, patter, etc.

My advice is to back out. Explain its not your style and you dont have a routine or experiece in that field.

I am only doing it because they had advertised it as a 2 magician show, and if htey cant find a replacement for the one that got cancelled, the show will be cancelled. I will be working with another magician, and i have done small stage shows, with disappear water, pull bra/underwear from between two scarves etc etc like joke tricks never anything serious, but i wanted to have one or two actually GOOD tricks, i am very good at improvising. I am kinda dissapointed that you think so lowly of me right off the bat, I would personally prefer not to do the show, but due to the situation i find it better to proceed. I am sorry if you disagree.

Hey there, Rowan.

Sometimes you can be put in the most uncomfortable of places. If it's college, I'd recommend a Children's trick. I'm sure the audience will have fun with that.

I'd recommend going to www.hanklee.org and combing over their kids magic catalog.

The 'coloring book' is very visual and can be very entertaining with the right patter.

If that's not your cup of tea. You could try using a 'guillotine'. Pick a med student if you can for a volunteer.

hope that helps.

I am thinking about doing "Date Magic" show. Have somehting like make a girl appear (not sure how im gunna do this yet), then make a rose appear with something like http://www.hanklee.org/xcart/product.ph ... t=8&page=2, afterwards doing Airborne. Possibly say something like hmmm.. this doesnt seem romantic enough, and pull out a candle to light. Make jokes about how hard it is to get a girls bra off, then pull the napkin in her shirt apart and have the bra between it. Any ideas/comments?

If you've got a theme, be sure to commit to it early and practice ironing out the routine.

I remember my professor in Engineer used to say "design 5% of the time and test 95% of the time".

You wouldn't believe how much of what I learned in Engineering applies to magic.

I am actually an engineering major as well. But i think that will work out the best and i could even make it into a transition because i could make the other magician do the last trick or two to "out do me" then go on into his show if he wants to

Hello Rowan and welcome to TM.
There is also a different approach to the show, you might want to concider, as you will be 2 magicians. If the other magician is a trained professional, you could be dressed up as a clown, making the goofy magic and mistakes. Even mess up a trick for the other one and make a mistake, like linking your Linking Ring to his belt or if he gets you to assist him in a trick, you could keep on "ruining" the magic and then make something unexpected happen in the end.

I understand David's concern, because magic is something you have to practice and for a whole show, you have to have the whole routine extremely smooth, even hire a skilled director. So many "halftrained" magicians have posted vids on YouTube and revealed the magic, simply because they were not skilled enough. Think it over!

Where in the world are you?

With warm greetings from Iceland!
