Would this work?

I really wanted to get a PK ring but I don't have the money right now so I was looking at ebay to see if i could find them for cheaper and I came across this http://cgi.ebay.com/MENS-JEWELRY-MAGNET ... dZViewItem

Do you think that this would work for the tricks that you use the pk rings for or is the pk ring incredibly strong?

in short no and i'll tell you why my friendly jewlery street merchant sells theas and i tried one and it will pick up a coin but just barely.
it will not do coin in bottle (some versions) nor will it alow a chop cup in anything pther than the thinest plastic cups.

i was looking myself and you will either have to make your own or by a pk ring at around £10.

No, it won't work I'm afraid! It's haematite (which rings a vague bell as being some kind of ore rather than a metal), what you're looking for is neodymium, "neo", or "rare earth" magnets. They are quite difficult to shape into anything other than a rod or a block without splitting and splintering; PK rings are actually a very good price for what they are!

If you are truly skint though, the other tenable alternative is to buy a small neodynium cube or disk which will cost you a matter of pence and superglue/araldite it to a cheap ring on the inside; obviously you then have to stop people seeing a clear shot of the inside of that hand though. If you made it a steel ring the magnet would stay there of it's own accord actually... this might be better, you could then subtly dettach it if people wanted a close look, or you could dettach it and use it to keep a coin hidden through a bottle label or something...
