Muscle Pass

Postby lindz » Feb 15th, '07, 12:07

I have a little tip out there for anyone who wants to learn the muscle pass. I personally had never really tried it until yesterday. I got my shiny silver dollar out and sat there for about an hour with no joy but then i got a flash of inspiration. I went to kids sweetie draw because i remembered they had some of those choclate sweets the ones with the coin wrappers on them. I got one of them the exact same size as my dollar and i had a practise with that and guess what the first time it worked. Now i dont know why this worked i think its because its a nice size but its a lot lighter than the dollar. So i practised with this for about two hours {and everytime i did it sucessful i got to eat one  so you can mix pleasure with well pleasure} then when i went back to the real dollar that worked first time so i am pleased. This may work or may not work for you but i thought someone may be able to get some use out of it. The only thing now is i have run out of the choclate sweets where i have eat them  so it looks like a trip to the shops. Also they would be great if you was doing a coin routine to a child you could give them the choclate after just an idea.

when you say you can do it, How high can you pass it?

I saw James Brown do this and I couldn't believe it. I'm practicing this at the moment and I only make it jump an inch.

I by no means am great at the muscle pass, but I have been more successful over the last week. I am acheiving better results by placing the coin further back out of regular CP position. It seems that because the mscles further back are closer together it makes it easier to shoot the coin out.

Im not sure how close this represents the correct way to do it.. but it seems to work. I cant shoot the coin upwards at all.. but I can shoot it across from one hand to the other no problem

Well i can now do it sideways quite far but as of yet i cant get it very high certainly no where near as high as james. I can probally get it about an inch the same as you but my best is about 2 inches but for about 5 hours practise i would say thats pretty good and i cant do it every time upwards but a couple more months of solid practise im hoping to get it quite high. If i didnt use the choclate coin i am pretty sure i wouldnt be doing it at all now i think because its so light it helped me to get the right placement and pressure to work it out then when i went back to the real coin i just positioned it the same and applied a little more pressure but its a lot harder thoe.

Hello lindz

Have only just got good at doing the Muscle Pass can not do it so the coin jumps from the bottom hand to the top hand slowly getting there . I got lots of blisters after practicing but then found that the muscle after doing it for some time will build up stronger and it jumps out of your hand better so I think when you start to get blisters you are all most getting there. I stop for a couple of days to let them heal up a bit then start all over again.what I did was when I found the right placement imaked a line with a tattoo maker pen. so I did not lose the right spot. when I got better by placeing the coin in my right hand with my left hand I then got out of the habit by using the classic palm technic. I started out using a very old 1897 one penny coin. Using a lighter coin . you Will get the coin higher. lighter the the better. I am practieing with a heavier coin like Half Crown 1948.

Lindz i have found this great site that you can get lots of
Different chocolats coins and other Party Supplies a top site
just type in coins in the search in this sit below and you get to the page qricker

I've seen James perform this between 12 and 18 inches

The chocolate coin is a pretty good idea. I wish I had thought of that when I learned it. I spent weeks with a regular US Half-Dollar, and I get 12-15 inches of height with my left and about 10-12 with my right. I am trying to juggle with the muscle pass but I can't get the the coins into position fast enough to keep it going.

The closest thing I could get to juggling was shooting a coin from each hand towards the other hand.

At my peak I could get between 18 and 24 inches regularly. These days it's more like 12-18 inches :(

Mind you, back then noone else was doing it!

Take care, Ian

Sounds like you're all learning much quicker then me dagnammit, it took me a good three painful months to get to the standard I'm at now which is about 12 inches.

In reality though that's all you need. As a flourish it looks nice but the real beauty of the move is it's utility use. With a bit of thought you can do all sorts of loads, vanishes, etc. It took me a while after learning it to work this out, but now I use it all the time. On the Cultural Xchange dvds there's a lot of tricks that use it and your eyes really get opened to the applications. After a bit you'll get used to loading it from the finger tips into exactly the same position as you usually cp and then you're laughing.

Well after one week of practise i can successfully say i have sore hands but i can get it to about 6 inches 9 times out of 10 now the highest ive got is about 7 inches. I dont know why but i have taken to this move like a duck in water shame everything else i practise dont happen this quick. Cheers for all the tips i have been trying to work on applications with this and i have a few ideas but first im going to give it more practise until i can reach 12 inches {only because this seems to be the norm} then i will start to add the applications on to it Thanks everyone.

Moves are funny like that aren't they? I've found certain moves almost impossible to master or even perform after loads of practice (for example I can't for the life of me do the final bit on Sankey's Leaving Home which is a shame cos I love the trick) whereas others come instantly (it took meages to work out why people couldn't cp a coin straight away).

Yeah i know something as simple as a card fan took me ages to master properley but then i can do some of the most advanced moves no problem. The cp took me a while to get my hand looking natural the same as the french d but once you get them nice they seem like really simple moves. There as been a few tricks where i couldnt do a certain something which is a bu**er but i always try to find another move to get round it if i like the trick. Actually i brought a trick a few years ago and i couldnt do it at all i practised it for weeks but it wasnt having none of it but i got it out my draw the other day and did it first time which im quite pleased with because its like buying a new trick all over again :D .
