STUD playing cards..

Postby dizzydog » Feb 24th, '07, 07:46

Probably the best cards ive ever messed with. Especially the originals that come in the Red or Blue pack.

Do you guys remember last year when these were going for like $30-40 a pack on Ebay?

They were sold out in the US for a long time.

Anyway....Walgreens discontinued them. Stock up if you can find them!! Most awesome cards for Magic and Manipulation. Thin and awesome Linen finish.

Yea there are many kinds of Studs about.
The newly discontinued kind (Brighter and more vivid colours than the current Studs), were all the rage on eBay just before Christmas, with single decks going for up to $200.

Many people believe that the older ones are better, to me its probably just a placebo thing.
I have a friend who has tried both kinds and still believes the newest kind of them that are still available are the best.

But even before the ones that were discontinued a year or so ago, there is an even rarer deck before that which was discontinued in the past.

To me its just a deck of cards, only bonus with an older deck is better colours in my opinion.
The new Studs are a good choice for magic and flourishes, just a nice deck.

Apparently some Walgreen stores still have some of the old Studs, so for the Americans, check your local one to see if they are there.

Note: Another bonus with the old Studs was that they came with 4 Jokers, despite the fact that the box said "2 Jokers".

Old STUDS actually came with 3 jokers. The new decks are fine, much thicker but the edges are indeed a bit harsh.

The old decks that say "With 2 Jokers" and actually had 3 handle like a DREAM and had an awesome Linen finish.

I believe that they came with 4 Jokers.
Either that or they varied between packs whether they came with 3 or 4 Jokers.

Because I remember the Allan Ackerman routine on "Hit the Road" where he teaches a sandwich effect that requires 4 Jokers, so he recommends Stud's for the routine.

Ive got 3 of the decks and all 3 came with 3 Jokers.

These were purchased a couple of years ago so they are the originals. Soid Red and Solid BLUE pack.

Either way, great cards.

Tom, have you tried the old Studs before? I know that you have new Studs. Any good? I'm not too sure about the design though... I still prefer WPTs. I also find that Alladins are amazing because of the fact that they have no finish yet handle so brilliantly!!!

To be honest, cards are cards. As long as they aren't plastic and they are made with a good finish, they are good. The old Studs can't be THAT much better can they? I mean, it all depends on how you break in a deck of cards. I can tell you that my last deck of WPTs were the best deck I've ever handled. This is mainly because of the way I broke in the deck that time. The cards handled like heaven with springs, pressure fans and LePaul spreads.

I actually like the new Bicycles Masters deck if it wasn't on such a thick stock.

As Tom said, it's a like a placebo thing. I really can't imagine how much better a deck of old Studs can be. Ditto with Jerry's Nugget decks. I just like the looks of Jerry's Nugget but I wouldn't pay so much for just a deck of cards (unless I'm loaded!! :D:D:D:D)

Yes.

Get some and you shall see. I mean ive got about 80 decks of cards and all diff brands and can tell you the only 1 kinds that truly SHINE in a different way are the Tally Ho VIPERS and STUD originals.

Period.

Doesn't really matter what cards you have, its all the same in my opinion.
Once you break them in, all cards are tamable.

Onle noteable factors in cards that I look for are; size and back design.

And no, I haven't tried old Studs.

Saw a 12 pack of Vintage STUDS on sale on Ebay for $90!

Not bad considering these will be selling for $20 a pack soon.

The day you can show me that someone can do manipulations/fourishes with Studs (or Nuggets and Vipers) that CANNOT BE DONE with a deck of Bikes or Tallys - is the day I'll start believing that the extra cost is worth it.

I have a brick of the old Studs laying around - and I personally don't care for them over any other cards. As for Vipers - I think those LOOK great, but their have been a huge number of complaints about how well they work for manipulation. I personally find them to be a bit oily - and the strange odor they emit has caused me to put them back on the shelf.

Bottom line - it's opinion. You think that Studs are better - doesn't mean they ARE better. That's your opinion, and it's all well and good to have it. Doesn't mean that the rest of us need to agree.
