Strange Inventions

Postby lindz » Mar 1st, '07, 16:17

I dont know how well this thread is going to work but thought id give it a go because i have just been thinking about it and it could make an interesting read if it works right. What i want to know is if you have used something to make a magic prop. I dont want to know things like ladies tights to make IT because thats quite well known i want to know strange things e.g like one of them old telephone dials or something silly that you have used to make a magic prop and what you made with it and how well did it work. I just think this could be a funny and interesting thread if it takes off.

okey dokey some things i have made and used:-

a mini sundile brass plague 2" across and some sticky arrows to make a crazy compas, whent down well till some kid perloined it.

turned my own wooden cups in shop class, made my own spiked coin case in shop class.

used a pill box as a not boston box the other one, had a nice dragon design on the top and a nice recess in the botom.

made my own set of pom pom sticks, ok till kid pulled to hard and broke them.

made a few mirror boxes of diferent sizes and designs based on mark wilsons book.

made my own three foot sliding die box and refined itr over a six month period, sold it for a wadge of cash, bourght plans for origional box and had several sliding die boxes for ideas.

made up a set of victory cartones out of tv packing, used them for three shows till they fell apart, designed some out of the then new fabric and wire that retains its shape but was beaten to maeket by a far margin.

variose kids effects from a4card laminate, flapper boards, card changers and jumboed packet effects.

made a few flat change bags to my requirements, had lots of help from my mum who was a seamstress and my dad who was a fitter and turner, so lots of brass boxes and rods for many effects.

is this the sort of thing your after my friend.

I made a chop cup style card box once, worked lovely just never found a way to slip it into a routine.

Also made a PK skirt with some strategically sewn magnets. Makes for brilliant PK effects at the table. This is one I use all the time.

One word of warning here though. Don't use too short a skirt as things can get very embarrassing when you walk away from the bar, unaware that your skirt has taken a shine to the keys in man standing next to you's pocket.

Wow yeah thats so interesting. I cant even put the kinder egg toys together let alone build elegant props like this. I think its amazing and interesting what people can do if a little bit of thought and effort are put into something. I am always constanly looking at things to find ways of using them for magic and i look a things from thimbles, elastic bands, paperclips { the usual} to the most bizzare things like parts of lamps, tables, well anything and thought it would be just enjoyable seeing what other people are using and with a list like yours it just proves there so many things we can use, change and build to become useful to us.

I've gaffed pencils by removing the eraser, cutting it in half, gluing a small neo in place and then puting the half eraser back on top. Very handy for using as an innocent pointer and thus 'divining' the shimmed card in an envelope etc  !

Apart from the usual gaffed envelopes with double pockets and doctored books for word tests etc I've turned cheapo small gift boxes into card changing utilities.

I turned a chocolate bonbon box (a clear pyramid, very nice) into a box for a mental key and lock effect (the hinge for the pyramid was robbed from an old jewelry box).

I hand made 3 voodoo dolls for a mentalism effect I came up with using an old shirt cloth, some pillow filling, and some good old thread and needle, came out great, yet a bit scary

I made my own IT system for the voodoo dolls using some IT, a hook I made by banding a small needle, and some super glue.

Made a whole lot of swami gimmicks using kid size TTs that I once got in a lot I won on eBay.

I made the "circle square" and mirror box I used in my kidshow with building plans from a "do it yourself" book for kids I had since I was 10.

Built a Voodoo box illusion out of cardboard scraps (because I couldn't find one the right size).

Probably more, now that I'm into mentlism I make a lot of small stuff like my Russian roulette kit that only cost me 5$ worth of equipment to make, a 5 ball choice bag (for a truth or lie effect), gaffed a small white board for several effects, and so on.
