Rock on Tom!!

Grease - a 25 year old movie where the moral of the tale is that being nice doesn't pay and success comes from acting like cheap trash.
Elvis - has had more success since his demise than in all the years he was 'alive'
Cowboys - were mostly black or French or English thus putting paid to the John Wayne scenario. And the women probably looked more like a cross between Roseanne and Sammy Davis Jr than Jayne Seymour.
Line Dancing - I can't say too much here as she who must be obeyed goes line dancing every Wednesday evening. Still can't understand why but it does give me an hour or so to practice a few sleights and moves so am looking forward to the seige/Elmsley tutorial!
Dallas & Dynasty - more proof that greed and nastiness is good!
Bruce Springfield - whoever gave him the 'Boss' subtitle? Perhaps his PR guys?

Having said all that, I still love the old TV Beverly Hillbillies!

OK, getting back to talking about Schhhhh...you know who, the links from the BBC story referred to above include these gems from December 2000 after the Entombed in Ice stunt:

Jack Delvin, spokesman for the Magic Circle, says that Blaine's success is based on a return to magic's roots. "There's nothing new with street magic," he says. "People have earned their living from it since day one, when they performed the cup and balls trick in ancient Egypt. David Blaine is different to most street magicians, though. He owns his own company and only does television."

But David Blaine is not to everyone's taste. The Scottish magician and comedian, Jerry Sadowitz, no friend of the profession's establishment himself, derides him as "David Bland" and Blaine found the worldly-wise British far more difficult to impress than Americans or Amazon Indians.

All of which has cheered me up tremendously!

PS The cup (singular) and balls trick? Can't wait to see that one!
PPS Being different to most street magicians and only doing it for TV? I'd say that means you're primarily a TV performer, not a street magician.
PPPS - OK, I admit it - I'm in a right picky mood today!

For what it's worth, I'm also in a bit of an 'angry' mood... so here goes...

Let's just think for a moment... where else in the world but the good 'ol 'US of A' would a guy who looks and speaks like he's been smoking funny fags for a week be able to credibly stroll up to a bunch of angry looking 'homey-gangster' dudes and 'mess with them' by belittling them in front of their buddies???

OK, UK version:
A sinewy stoned guy walks into a rough part of one of our inner cities - and finds the ugliest, nastiest looking bunch of dudes he can hanging around the streets - "Let me show you something" he says as he reaches into his pocket...

Firstly, they'd freak out and probably stab him - even if there WAS a camera there. A bunch of hyped, neurotic smack-heads wouldn't think twice about it....!!!!

There MUST be a set-up somewhere...

So, that off my chest - back to our 'conservative British' reaction to the perspex box.

Leave ANYTHING shiny and clean around in the UK for a couple of days and it either gets vanalised, graffiti'd (your average keen 'tagger' does not care how high/how dangerous his target is!!!), stolen or worse.

But he'll be under high security, no doubt - so that's no good. We won't get him that way...

And why up high on a crane??? If he's 'superhuman', surely he could do the same stunt underwater? or even on a table in the middle of Harrods???

Crane lines can conceal pipes - wires???? It's an ideal disguise. And being that high up, how do we know it's still a box, not a six-sided LCD screen playing looped video???
It's not likely that anyone's going to go and inspect it, is it???

Oh I do wish I was less cynical and could just sit back and enjoy the show...

The Blaine Thing....

Postby paul frost » Aug 26th, '03, 12:57

Hi guys, I actually met the infamous Mr Blaine about 18 months ago whilst in New York. He was doing a interview outside Dunkin Donuts so I hung around for a while to see if I could catch a word or two.

Once he realised I was from England he told me he was planning a 'BIG THING' in England which he was to escape from a falling box which was to be suspended from a craine over the Thames.
So it seems he has changed the plan slightly... or has he?

Will he last 44 days and night or will it end a bit quicker in one of the live up-date shows?

We'll have to wait and see.

Paul

And on the subject of Blaine being a self-hailed 'Christ' figure - does anyone see a connection between the UK stunt and Lent??? (Fasting alone away from civilisation for 40 days and 40 nights???)

Scary.

And I agree about the physical changes... maybe he's following the habits of a Camel - i.e. eat loads of food and store it up as fat???

Who knows?

Also, he's front-page on the Telegraph today, I see, with an article inside.

Crazy.

I can see the headlines now, "Magician locked away for 44 days...DIES"
"Magic Circle is baffled!"...."We don't know how he did it!"

I know it's for kiddiwinks but check out:

http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/v ... 167455.stm

where you can vote for one of three choices:

1) He's as cool as they come!
2) He's completely bonkers!
3) He's nothing but a big faker!

Tough choice between 2 & 3 but, at the time I looked, the scores were:

1) 35.55%
2) 42.75%
3) 21.70%

Cast your vote now folks!

Probably not but you can mutter it under your breath while you vote - like I did!

I see from the Magic Week site that this whole stunt is only part of some larger project being filmed - I would mention the full details but I lost interest very quickly.
