What tricks should I do?

Postby AJ » Mar 4th, '07, 22:10

Hi im just beginning magic because i took an interest of it from david blaine, criss angel, the movie the illusionist ect. I just ordered the big $100 dollar package from http://www.dreamlandmagic.com/ , I would like some advice of what tricks I should perform first and in what order. Also which ones should I learn first and which ones are old and i should forget. By the way im 13 years old.So some tricks i probably cant do because of my age. Heres a list of what it comes with...

Balducci Levitation
360 Degree Arm Twister
Original Floating Bill Illusion
Voodoo Ash
Card From Mouth
Fly Resurrection
Psycho Kinetic Time
Card thru Window
Card in Bottle

ID
Cigarette Thru Card
Folding/Biting Coin
Mirage Deck-Bicycle Cards
Haunted Pack of Cards
Cut and Restored Rope
Professor's Nightmare Rope
Vanishing Silk
Linking Rubber Bands
Magic Sponge Balls
2 Card Monte
One Hundred Dollar Bill Illusion
Vanishing Deck
52 Classic Card Tricks Book
The Hummer Card
Floating Match
Shrinking Coin

Thanks for reading all this
:D

Well...

It really depends on what YOU want to do. What interests you most. This will be what you really feel motivated to learn and perfect. Over time you will come to the other material and similarly become interested in and work on that.

Really, my advice would have been to pick up something like The Royal Road To Card Magic (Book or DVD, both would have been considerably less than the hundred bucks) or if you're a coin sorta person Bobo's Modern Coin Magic - you might want to look into these as they will give you a solid grounding in card and/or coin magic if that's what you're interested in, and you won't be dependent upon special cards and gimmicks.

"52 Classic Card Tricks Book" sounds good to me and will probably give you a much better grounding in magic than all those gimmicks.

Im also thinking about getting a changing cap because i heard they can store some props that you may need on the street and also offer a trick

In my opinion i think you will be dissapointed with this package most of these effects are gimmicked and they dont live up to the hype they have around all newbies to the world of magic. Most of these effects are not practical to use in the real world either. To be honest it's best to start off with royal road to card magic and bobo modern coin magic. Sorry if this advice sounds a bit harsh but it's an honest opinion.

The two rope tricks are good.
So are sponge balls.
ID is a classic.

I would advise you pick up some books, rather than tons of single effects and gimmicks. You will learn a lot more in the long run.

Dont get me wrong there not all bad but they are not much use to a beginner . The good effects there are: ID, both the rope tricks, maybe vanishing silks, sponge balls, linking bands can be good if performed right, 52 classic card trick book and cig through card can be a good effect if performed properly. I didnt mean all the tricks were bad even thoe a lot of them are in my opinion i just meant they are not very good for a beginner because even thoe alot of the tricks are simple to perform and will get some good reactions a experianced performer will make these sort of effects into miracles rather than just good tricks. Some of these tricks thoe look good on t.v but some of them require a bit of setup which is just not practical in the real world. Beginers are better to start off with a couple of good books and work your way through them before you go out showing everyone because these books can take you to next level and make you a good performer with proper practise and dedication.
