Do you try new things?

Postby Lady of Mystery » Mar 5th, '07, 16:01

Just an idle ramble from me, but I'm sure there's a point to it somewhere.

When I first started out in magic I bought myself a range of basic things that I thought I'd need, including cards, sponge balls, TT and silks.

I started with cards, which I had a great time learning and eventually putting together some routines and going out performing. Then for the next 6 months or so I just stuck to cards and some coin magic, other types of magic didn't really interest me at all.

That was until a couple of months ago when a little pink sponge ball jumped out of the draw where she'd been consigned to for nearly a year and rolled up to my foot. 'Why do you not love me' came a squeaky little voice.

So I thought to myself, lets give these silly little things a go. So pulled out my trusty copy of Mark Wilson and turned to the chapter on sponge balls. An hour or two later and I was hooked. They just seemed so elegant and so much fun. They'd be great, done to music I thought, so I hunted through my CD collection, tried a few different things which didn't quite fit. Then I came across a funky performance of Swan Lake, by Madness. Brilliant!

So altered Mark Wilson's routine slightly to fit in with the music and added my own finish. I was having a great time with these new toys. Went down stairs, armed with my balls and CD and showed my new routine to my boyfriend. Had him in fits of laughter, he told me that was the most entertaining routine he'd ever seen me do.

So I got thinking, what other areas of magic are there out there that I'd never given a fair chance? So I went back over everything I had, re-reading and just playing around, silks are supurb fun. I'm having a ball learning ropes at the moment. The TT is amazing!

So I was just wondering how many other people out there have just dismissed areas of magic because they thought they looked old or out of date?

Now listen up class, your homework for this week is to find something you've always thought silly or pointless and just give it a go. You never know, you might find something you really enjoy. :D

I'm pretty much settled with my tarot readings now, quietly confident with them - i can deliver a decent reading nowadays and my hit rate is pretty high so far...

but i should, really, go back to learning some more palmistry...i concentrated on tarot for quite a while and kinda forgot the rules for most of palmistry...

and...sssshhh...its a reverend mark lewis palmistry teach-in...

...i've gotten back into coins a little recently too...i felt i should have a little dabble now i have a certain level of finger-confidence...

plus, a break from my usual stuff will do me some good...

This weekend I dug out of my magic cupboard a rather nice cups and balls set I bought some time ago and then never really used. I also have the first volume of the Michael Ammar DVDs on the subject.

So now as I sit watching TV instead of the quiet russle and clicks of cards being shuffled, cut, reversed etc my wife is having to put up with the clink and clunk of the cups as they come together or go down on the tray I am using.

Anyway, it is great fun and I can't think why I havent picked it up before.

The other thing I am trying to teach myself is Tarot readings but I am a bit slow with that. Anybody have a favourite source for Tarot card meanings?

For Tarot - The Psychic Reverend Mark Lewis from here has a very good straight forward dvd available - you should drop him a line on here...

other than that, there's a book called TAROTMANIA (cant remember the authors name though), you should be able to find it on amazon.co.uk im sure...

I've got a nice little book that I bought quite a few years ago on the meanings of all the cards, I'll dig it out and let you know the name when I get home.

There is one area i have neglected up until now and that is performing magic that takes alot of balls. Im ready to move to the next level and what area am i talking about well it's what i call extreme misdirection. We all use misdirection but how many magicians have got the bottle to perform effects like card under specs watch, watch steal, pickpocket, specs signed card in specs pocket and effects like these that rely purely on misdirection and a lot of it. I know ive never tried any of these in real situations. So over the next few weeks im going to give this a go because to me this is the area i want to go in magic and i just thought theres no time like the present. I also think i am good enough to get away with it but it's just having the bottle to go for it. So this is my new area of magic and task ive set myself and i havent not done this because it's old or outdated it's because i havent had the bottle until now.

I think with those kind if effects.. if you have you performance worked out to a 'tee ??' then its quite simple.. but you need to draw the spec in and make them involved..

Ive done my own version of signed coin under specs watch in test conditions with a test spec.. went down well.. but generally you need a good story and Im no Jackanory!!

I have tried them in test conditions aswell which have all gone down good but i think doing it in a paid gig is whole new thing which takes alot of bottle.

I've always wanted to learn how to do really good steals and pickpocketing, not for the obvious juvenile reasons, but for magic of course. I always think it's cool when a spec freaks out after realizing the performer has inserted / taken something from their pocket.

anyone know any good sites or books that give techniques on this? I imagine it'd be hard to find since stealing is so looked down upon... :?
