The pass with smaller hands

Postby majs » Mar 5th, '07, 18:39

Hello everyone,

My first post here. I'd like to thank all of you with all the help I received from reading past posts. The main improvement is on my DL. I got Double Take from a recommendation and that helped make my DL a lot smoother and natural looking. I ended up choosing the knock-out DL taught during the first few minutes of the video. It took me about a week of doing it when I'm just sitting around at home or work to get the hang of it.

Anyway, right now I'd like to learn to do a pass. For those that have small hands (I'm asian, my ring finger is a size 7-8, also having problem palming) which one do you use? It seems really hard to cover up the cards when I tried doing the classic pass. I reverted back to the double under cut which is fine, but would like to get a pass going.

What video do you guys recommend? I know I can get books but I'm more of a visual type of person. I need to see exactly how it is done, then I'll be able to read and actually understand what's going on.

Thanks! :D

I hear great things about R Paul Wilson on the Royal Road to Card Magic.

I have both "on the pass" DVD by kaufman and small hands with huge windows between the fingers.
The DVD helped the latter pose no significant problem any more. That and lots of practise.

The magic word with the pass is 'practice'. 8)

If you've got small hands, bridge-sized cards can be better for you.

Practice in front of a mirror, or a webcam.

As for RRTCM 5 DVD set, I have it, it is very good, but there's only a small amount about the pass.

''On The Pass'' is supposed to be a good DVD for the pass, but I haven't seen it myself.

I'll check up on that video. What pass are you using the most? By the way, I too have big windows between the fingers. Do you find yourself using any palming at all? Thanks!

i actually learnt the pass from the royal road to card magic book. I read that, and it took me about 6 months, but now i have it quite cleanly, and use it regularly. It is gonna take time anyway - why pay more than you have to to learn it? I certainly found it understandable

Practice is indeed the key. I actually just got a webcam just for that.

I'm looking to getting that 5 RRTCM dvd set maybe for my birthday. :D

I just don't know about those bridge decks. I see a lot more of the regular decks here. So I guess I'll just try to cope with the regular deck. It might take longer to get a good pass going, but it should be worth it.

I guess I'm trying to poll for what pass people with small hands use the most. Thanks for the reply.

also, a pass that is good for small hands in the turnover pass......that was the first i leant, and found it the easiest. also good, is (if i remember the name correctly) the herman pass? though IMO it isnt as good as the classic, I did some very visual colour changes back in the day before the classic was learnt, and that is very easy.

I just am having a hard time learning magic from books :( . It definately would be a cheaper way. I can learn computer stuff from books, but magic, I just can't seem to visualize it.

I got card college a few years back (getting the magic bug again) and I remember looking at the DL from the center of the deck. It wasn't until I got Double Take that I understood exactly what was going on  . I do have a few books but seeing it done first seems to be the best learning tool for me. Thanks!

I use the turnover a fair bit, along with the classic and another from there, the name of which escapes me now.

And yes, I palm a lot more than is noticed. All I can suggest is to forget about it and get on with it. try handing the deck to someone with the card already in position in the same hand and let them take the deck to shuffle, you may be surprised at how disceptive this is. Ignore the card, it is not really there. If you are overly conscious of it, then your actions may give it away. Does that make sense?

I don't know about palming. I guess I'm just not that comfortable with it right now. I can still do a bunch of tricks that does not involve palming of a card. Maybe I'll tackle that some time in the future. I just can't seem to hide the card well enough to make my hand look natural. :(

Thank you all for your reply. I'll practice the turnover pass in the next few weeks. It looks like the easiest move to pull off for someone with small hands. We'll see how that works.

a tip is to use a mirror. It builds confidence, as just because you can see something it doesn't mean others can ;)

oh - and a jerky webcam! then even if you mess up, the camera doesn't see it, and it makes you feel good, even though you know you can't do it 8)

well...it did for me anyway :P
