do these card guards actually protect your cards? or is it a none-essential gizmo?

I have a card guarded deck in me back pocket at all times, i sit on them and forget they're there, and when i come to use them, they are perfect, and nice and flat. (it stops them warping).

The best that I've had is the Porper clip/guard

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

All the card guards i have seen are in poker size.... Does anyone know of a place where there is a metal card guard in bridge size?
