A good way to build dexterity is to do the following.

Hold the full deck between your first and second finger for 20 seconds, then between the middle and ring and finally the ring and pinky..

It helps immensely. Of course you can start with a packet of cards and work up to the entire deck but it works.. you could also do the same thing but use your wrist..

When I was practising it my fingers didn't want to stretch neither but I just played around with it and found an easier way to do it. I then practised it this easier way for a few weeks then went back to the proper way and where my hands had adjusted to this move I did it first time not perfectly by all means but I just kept at it and I finally got it. The easier way I did it was to start with my thumb at the short end instead of the long end hope this helps I cant really say anymore because of exposure.

Is the problem that you can't get the cards in the starting position or that you can't perform the "move"?

I don't think there's any other way to get comfortably in the starting position without physically stretching your fingers until it becomes comfortable. Being a guitarist, I was lucky! It may take a while but eventually it won't hurt...

Is it the original Darrel version you're trying or the Paul Harris variation where the deck starts off between your fore and middle finger?

If as I suspect it's the latter then unfortunately it's a case of much painful practice, I managed to slice my fingers up quite nicely learning but when you get it it's all worth it :D

I tried for ages to get the hot shot cut down but couldn't hold the deck sturdy enough between my fore and middle finger and so came across the 'easier' version. Well I find it easier.
This is the version where the deck is held in the same manner as you would a charlier cut. I only recently mastered this cut after trying this version of it. I think this is darrels original version?

Which part exactly are you stuck on?

The cut itself can be done in many, many ways. Just do any single handed cut really... A Charlier, a thumb cut, a revolution cut... list goes on. Daryl's original version is good because it ends up with your index finger in the correct position.

Hi guys/girls!

I'm having trouble with this... I can get the cards into the position, it's just the actual 'move' I can't seem to do? Any tips please?

just reach over with your thumb, cut half the deck off and get that half in back of the half that was originally at the bottom. I have to rely on my little finger to keep the front portion of the deck from falling and getting too messy (in a position similar to the staring position of a Charlier cut).

smoother

Postby jcwebs09 » Apr 13th, '07, 13:38

Hey i would say the biggest thing is to not push so hard. if you do it lighter, the card will want to come out smoother. plus you are not trying to push 5 feet across the room, just practice getting it half a foot just enough for you to catch it in the other hand. (i think the cards you use is also very important, "Masters" i find work best, because the card stock is thicker and the card jumps easyer.)
