I need some tunes

Postby Lady of Mystery » Mar 22nd, '07, 10:56

Ok folks, time to dive into the collective knowledge of TM :D

I'm trying to find some good tracks for my magic to music routine I'm putting together.

What I'm looking for is some decent length instrumental ska type tacks, some Madness tracks work well but tend to be quite short. This isn't really a sort of music that I know much about so was wondering if any of you guys have any suggestions?

Thanks :D

Try "Green Onions" by Booker T and the MGs.

Not quite as lo-fi, but still good fun:

Dance Hall Crashers
Skankin Pickle
Mustard Plug
Lightyear
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones

And then of course there's Operation Ivy.

I could go on and on if you wanted me to...

Hi Lady of Mystery

I have oodles of ska music and so I may be able to help here. Firstly there is Ska and Ska revival. I mainly have ska which is mostly from the 50's, 60's and 70's Jamaica. I could email you some samples of the kind of thing I'm thinking of.
If you wish to buy ska then I highly recommend the Trojan Records boxsets. There is a Ska and a ska 2 3 disc set which you can sometimes pick up on the cheap (£7). In fact anything from the trojan label is superb.

PM me and let me know if you want me to email some bits and bobs.

If it is more ska revival (Madness, specials etc.) then I'm not gonna be much help I'm afraid.

as tomo and boba said...

you cant beat booker t and the mgs, though not ska, intrumental...(they were otis redding's backing band as well as a group by themselves)...

melting pot by them is around 7 minutes...
try the bar-kays too...and possibly, the odd track by The Ventures (there'an excellent track called The Horse by them)...

also, The Players, and an album called On the Decks...all instrumental, only a few years old, 60s sounding....

as for ska, i hated madness and all that lot, i speeeeeeeeet on them...

go for the originals as boba said, those trojan boxed sets are excellent, especially the mod one...also, try a band called The Meters...funk, mostly instrumentals again...

the georgie fame version of green onions is great too...has a good blast of horn section in it too...

ah yes, my other nerd-alert interest is music...you have been warned...

you could also go wierd, there's some great proggressive rock instrumentals...try the first album by The Nice...thoughts of everlist davejack i think it's called...

peacefrog by the doors
root down by jimmy smith (as sampled by the beastie boys)
apache by the incredible bongo band

there's also a kinda good album by a guy called Gil Evans, all instrumental jazz versions of Jimi Hendrix numbers....i'll shut up now...

Never heard them, but the Skatalites came up on a Google search, and it might be of interest to you, as they do instrumental ska versions of popular songs. So it all sounds low-com-denom, but if it's the attitude and beat you're looking for, it could be worth checking out.

The skatalites when one of the giants of traditional ska but if they have resorted to doing ska versions of popular hits then they should bow they're heads in shame.

I've had a butchers at what I have and have come up with the following:

Sudden Destruction - Johnny "Dizzy" moore (Trojan Ska box set disc 2)

Pheonix City - Roland Alphonso (Trojan Ska box set disc 2)

Third man Theme - Granville Williams orchestra (Trojan Ska box set disc 3) Very caberet this one. A ska version of the Third Man (Yes the film)

I wont look for anymore just in case I'm on the wrong track bt let me know if you want me to email you a sample.

There's a good ska compilation I have on Trojan records called "Young, Gifted & Black", which, whilst not all instrumental, has some great stuff which is such as 'Double Barrel', "Al Capone" and 'Skinhead Moonstomp".

Freddie, that's a great call. That album was my summer driving choice a couple of years back when I first got an MP3 player in the car.

There is some poop on it, but in general a good call.

"ooooh, oooooohhhhh me ears are alight..."

I'll certainly take a peek at some of your suggestions Abraxus, as I would imagine there are some elements of gold in there somewhere!

I hate having eclectic musical tastes sometimes, it proves rather expensive—especially since I got an iTunes account !
