Using a marked deck

Postby Carl Buck » Mar 30th, '07, 09:59

Does anybody routinly use a marked deck as their deck when performing? I never have, up until last night, and now doubt I'll go back as it offers so much more scope for 'miracles' :D

The only problem is I'm always worried somebody will spot the markings, although they are so obvious that they get ignored!!

Yep, it's got good coverage of misdirection, and explains the Boris Wild system, too (though not in a way that you can easily produce your own Wild Marked Deck).

I've always been a fan of Hidden in Plain sight... I'm now even stocking it at NUMS.

The crux of the matter about being afraid of marked decks being spotted is that if you exhude confidence, you should be able to keep their mind off the deck.

I use a marked deck for a few different effects and it's never been spotted. Just act natural with it and don't let them get suspisous, if they start thinking there's something fishy going on. Move on to something else and take their mind off it.

I have one and I barely use it, although I keep meaning to.
I spend all my time working on struggling with sleights when so much can be done so easily with marked cards etc.

There's some gems in Hidden in Plain Sight too, clever tricks which make it seem as though they couldn't have been done with a marked deck.

sure I use the marked deck all the time! I think its a good idea to use it for a few tricks beforehand that dont take advantage of the marking system, usually (out of nervousnessof being too consistent with finding out a card) I'll only perform two effects using the marking system. Very ideal to substitute for a standard deck and full of outs for more bold systems

I think I just got lazy with stacking the deck all the time :?

If I ever perform "Do as I Do" (as per RRTCM and various other sources) I always follow it up with the effect included in the Boris Wild deck when someone wants to "see it again". It leaves them shell-shocked.

I use one marked card in my routine for a mind-reading effect very similar to what Derren Brown does in Something Wicked This Way Comes (substituting cards for balls). It pretty much lives in my deck and I've only had one person ever notice it, but that's because he was an experienced card cheat... You don't come across them too often in performance!

I've also got a bottle of The Juice that I used to use on occasion, but I don't particularly like Bee cards, so I don't use it much anymore.

I used to use a marked deck last year, just one from a magic box I bought.. the markings were so clever..

I used to hand the deck out for inspection as my presentation back then wasnt so 'inconspicuous'.. but they never got noticed

I very much like using a marked deck with my ID.

It adds a whole new layer when I don't even see the selected card (I'm tend to use it with the pool table variation, if anyone knows it, which I'm sure you do!).

And yeah, yeah - two gaffed decks, I know. However, I can use the marked deck for all my other card effects, so it really doesn't matter.

warmerclimate, have you looked at the RaMa yet?

then the only thing left is the method.

Just a few days I came accross it.

Judging by the reviews, it seems that there is a mixed bag of reactions and experiences.

Do you own one? Would you recommend it?

I used to perform with a marked deck, one that wasn't that easy to read, but haven't for a while as I think lay people know about them.
When I have done effects using a standard deck, I have had some specs try and suggest that the deck is marked and want to look at the cards, which they happily can as there are no marks.
This makes me wonder how common the knowledge of a marked deck is, though I have been thinking of getting another one.
