Triumph

Postby kitaristi0 » Apr 3rd, '07, 06:49

It's likely this discussion has been had in the past but a quick search didn't provide any results so I'll try here.

I've been wanting to learn a good version of Triumph and I was looking for your opinions on which version you feel is the best or the one you would recommend. Ideally I'd like a version that could be done standing up but at a table is ok too.

I have Ninja 2 which has a very basic version of Triumph that I think is fine but I'm having some trouble with the Zarrow shuffle. I believe it's discussed in the Card College books which I have coming in a week or two so I can probably learn it there and start performing the basic version of Triumph.

Then there is Emerge Triumphant by Oz which looks very cool but may right now too hard, at least that's what I've read in some reviews. http://www.penguinmagic.com/product.php?ID=794

Probably the coolest version I've ever seen was a Youtube clip that involved culling the cards. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-RUEabVLvI. Unfortunately I can't cull the cards to save my life.

To recap, what's your favourite version of Triumph, which one should I learn, or should I perhaps learn more than one (though I'm not sure what good that would do).

There's a nice and easy to perform version in Mark Wilsons book. He doesn't call it Triumph though, I think it's Self Reversing Deck Outdone or possibly Slip Slop Shuffle outdone.

Also in Art of Astonishment is Gambler vs Mentalist vs Magician which is a nice simple yet effective triumph routine which has good patter, expalining the difference between the three names in the title.
I believe I should add that it was magicmonkey who put me onto to this and it is very good.

Volume One 8) (EDIT: Is correct :D)

Unshuffling Rebecca is my favourite Triumph effect - there's a bit of a discrepancy but it plays beautifully in actual performance.

It's hard to beat the good old Vernon Triumph, recently I've been doing Nacho Momma's Triumph by Garcia and that's really good. A straightforward triumph routine where the whole deck visibly changes colour at the end and can be handed out for immediate examination if you like. It's not really beginner stuff though, there's four passes in there for a start.

but garcia's triumph is very good! I did it for a friend who knows my style...fooled him like the shiz!

there is a reason why he called this the "triumph effect for magicians" :D

Also check out Hollingworth's triumph if you fancy a challenge. It is beautiful though. I do just the first half of it and like it as a quick trick.

Vernons Triumph (if tabled with the display - I think invented by Daryl) is in my view the best! Especially its good because its so vertasile and maintain the deckorder which makes it very suitable in conjunction with other effects. If you needs a brief setup for one routine - set it up (maybe while talking to the spec), then perform Triump and lo and behold after you are done, your setup is still there but NO ONE has the faintest idea!

If you want to spend two years learning the road runner cull, the utube version you refer to might be a cool alternative, however from the lay persons specpective I am not sure it beats Vernons version provided:

i) Spec are convinced that the cards are mixed faceup into face down cards in a genuine way.

ii) Spec are convinced that the cards are genuine (the inteligent lay person will think that all face down cards might be slighly different size that all face up cards, or that there in some other way have been tampered with the cars).

iii) Spec are convinced that you did not - in any relavant way - touch the cards after they are in the faceup facedown mixed stage,

When performed correctly I think Vernions version (with the added display, that will fool yourself every time you do it!) commes closest to satisfy i) ii) and iii) despite that there are numerous other versions of triump. I would however love to be able to do the version based on the roadrunner cull as an alternative method.

Magic is slight of mind!

Well I got my first Triumph effect under my belt. http://www.penguinmagic.com/europe/product.php?ID=649 I got it from the demo video but still bought it since Oz rocks.
