Card box routine

Postby shaneking » Apr 19th, '07, 18:15

I recently purchased Joe Porper's card box and it is a beautiful prop. However, most people with card boxes find that the "secret" is reasonably obvious to the average lay person. I have a routine that involves the "magic business" very early on to detract from the secret. I use the skeleton King of Hearts that can be found in the "Army of 52" gaffed deck. At the beginning, I show the normal king of hearts explaining that the kings or pharaohs of ancient Egypt, when they died, were entombed in a sarcophogus. I then show this by putting the real king of hearts face down into the box and closing it. I then immediately open it again ("secret" now done) and explain that first they had their organs removed and they were mummified. I wrap a tiny piece of linen around the "king of hearts" and even flash the card face up briefly. I then put the card back into the cardbox and leave the box open. I explain that the kings thought they could achieve immortal life in this state. Then, in 1922, an excavation team discovered the ancient tomb in the valley of the kings. They found the pharaohs toomb ! I then undress the "king of hearts" put the card face down in the spectators hand and explain that as the pharaoh is exposed to the air he turns to dust as from the desert. I then slowly and creepily turn the card over to show the skeletal face of the king of hearts. The ladies scream over this ! The fact that the "business" was done so effortlessly, quickly and early on means that most spectators cannot even recall the box ever being closed !!
