Hello - Looking for advice on psychology and mind technique

Postby bendixon » Apr 20th, '07, 22:46

Hi and thanks for the great forum. I'm not a very experienced magician, but I have done some card manipulation and classic sleight of hand, but I am really looking for some Derren Brown -type misdirection and psychology (if that's the right word). No, I'm not looking to pull the seedy blonde, the whole way that people thinks and ideas can be suggested interests me. I've already seen some things using search, like this http://www.ipswichmagicalsociety.co.uk/ ... talist.pdf.

So, for someone with practically no experience in the field, I would love some advice on good reading material for magic psychology and behavoir patterns. Any reply is apppreciated.

Many thanks,
Ben

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

One tip - If you don't read the posts fully then you will miss so much and possibly that one little nugget of information that will make a difference.

Yes, and these are not things you can pick up in a weekend. He is serious about the time needed to invest in this work.

One area of predictable human behaviour patterns you might like to try looking at is the field of cognitive biases and logical fallacies. There's some useful introductory information at Wikipedia. Basically, BCs and LFs are ways in which our default programming gets confused by previous assumptions and carefully crafted input and make us think we're making perfect sense of the world.

I just picked up Everday Mind Reading, which is a cool book on empathic inference and empathic accuracy based on real psychological experiments with real people. The author has conducted over ten years of tests on people to come up with his insights about how we can read people.

I also recommend Harling and Nyrup's Sleight of Mind.

My name is Benjamin Ludwig Dixon, I'm doing my A levels in London, and I'm interested in magic psychology. Among my interests are chess, maths and mountaneering. I recently clumb the valley blanche ~3900m and grammont (in flip flops in 1hr30mins ~2720m.
