One Life - Famously Reincarnated

Postby Tomo » May 1st, '07, 15:23

From radiotimes.com, tonight, BBC1, 10:45pm

"I am the royal wizard," announces Merlin, perched on his sofa in a satin cape. "Touch me." It's a generous offer. But given that Merlin is not, in this case, the fêted conjuror of Arthurian legend, but a 58-year-old eccentric called George, it's probably safer to decline. Like the other subjects of this astonishing observational documentary, George believes he is the reincarnation of a dead luminary. Whether this conviction is down to delusion, self-obsession or serious mental illness is unclear. Indeed, there are times - particularly those involving the bipolar Julian, a witty gent who believes he's God - when you may feel that the film's withering humour is misplaced. Still, while there are enough moments of empathy to assuage most suspicions of exploitation, the oddballs' unswayable bravado is, in a strange way, quite admirable.

Sounds like fun as well as being an interesting lesson in what the mind's capable of believing as absolute fact without any evidence whatsoever.

it always amazes me that when people are reincarnated, they are very rarely anything like "dave the milkman", or "erica the dutch toilet cleaner"...its always something exotic...

akorah's "sam" is 7 year old ancient etheopian i believe...

Odd, innit. It's almost as if they're making up for being disappointed with their life this time around by telling people, "do you know who I used to be?"

Hey that's Mandrake isn't it?

Apparently I used to be some little old lady who liked gardening in my last life, not quite as exciting as someone like Joan of Arc

Love it! I think I'll be Shirley Ghostman's "Sheba"

There should be some kind of online registry so that there are no clashes of past lives. Imagine it: it'd be like having two IP address the same on a network. Chaos! All those Cleopatras running about brandishing snakes, getting fruity with the multiple Mark Anthonys and demanding impractical baths.

Mind you, I have met two people who claim to be the reincarnation of Merlin, so at least one of them is wrong. I just wish I knew where they lived so I could invite them round to fight it out.

Don't forget about Buddhist beliefs. The Dalai Lama is supposed to reincarnate after one dies and there have been times where different aspects of the Dalai Lama have been reincarnated into different people at the same time.

I have a question for everyone in the forum: If you could be any person in history, who would you be?

yeah, but that's aspects, rather than complete personas...

there's a zen buddhist quote that says "if you meet buddha - kill him"

anyway, in answer to your question - i would want to be hugh heffner's fingers...
