I have been reading about this in Tarbell vol 2 but have yet tried to use it.
To me it seems that a bit of cover is needed and some misdirection.

Has anyone tried this and had any success with it?

Tried it on my partner. It's very angle sensitive, but you shouldn't need cover if it's done one-on-one.

Thanks Barry, it does look rather angle sensitive, so it's probably a bit risky for a stage scenario which what I was hoping for.
