What is it about lots of meaningless polls being started?

I guess that it's sometimes difficult to temper enthusiasm, when you're relatively new to anything that excites you

Whilst the polls/posts in question certainly aren't entirely off-topic, they're still really easy to view as Spam-like in their frequency and lack of any real considered content.

That said, we were all young once, and I'd guess that some gentle encouragement, asking posters of this nature to expand upon their own thoughts and perceptions may work wonders over time :D

A bit of common sense is needed. Asking advice on two similar effects is fine, but trite things as to which colour cards someone should buy, well, it's pointless. Asking for help is one thing but getting people to make every little decision for you is just plain odd.
I thing these younger ones are just trying to say they have some pocket money to spend on magic.

the anoying thing is the masses speek and the proposer does the exact oposite, thats the pointless task.
certainly dosn't make you want to participate in future polls. :x

So putting up a "What's Your favourite poll?" poll isn't really where we should be headed?

having recently started a poll (which to my defence i think is quite an interesting topic) i nervously answer this thread with a shakey i agree. although i think interesting thought provoking polls are of value, polls which ask are green bikes better than blue seem fairly pointless. although i have to say if you don't like the poll don't answer it, that way the people putting them up won't bother. *slinks back under parapit*

i imagine at least the person posing the question may care. and while some of us may feel it to be an irrelevant or stupid question, that person may want, or even deserve, at least one decent answer. we've all asked stupid questions in the past, in our youth.

(ooooo, hypocrisy, how i've missed you)

By definition if they're pointless then not only are they irrelevant, they'll be deleted as have about 4 over the recent weekend. If they're relevant and interesting then they'll prove their own worth. To be honest, having a Poll gives less information that a normal, decent and courteous thread will provide.

For me it wasn't the polls themselves that prompted this but the sudden influx of them.
It used to be quite a rare occurance to see a poll on TM and I logged in this morning to see a few had popped up and most of them didn't seem to hold much interest for me and was wondering if they had held any for anyone else.
Still as a forum any member has the right to start any thread they wish as long as it breaks no rules (I imagine) and a lack of response should be a measure of its worth?
I am very pleased however that no one has actually voted here.

What makes me laugh is when someone starts a poll '' Which DVD shall I buy? ''

10 minutes later 5 votes, no serious replies and the guy starting the thread replies '' Thanks guys Ill go for that one ''

How informative is a poll really? It doesnt really answer any questions, its just a statistic based on preference and you dont know who that preference belongs to.

There are plenty of people on this forum whose opinions I care about and whose advice I would trust. There are also those whose advice I wouldnt pay attention to, but only because there are better sources to turn to for answers.

So... a normal thread works better as I can judge the responses by those who reply and not having to take a statistic as the answer.

I know that the poster cares about the answer but there really is no need for a poll in most cases, especially a lot of the ones I have seen recently.

Hmm - yeah, that is a good point I suppose.

The reverse of this also applies: When there's reams of informed, detailed comment on a certain topic/effect - easily enough material to reach an informed decision about a purchase - and yet we still end up with a one-line request asking whether the subject's worth buying. Do some folk seriously not know how to use the Forum Search?

It does annoy me, I must admit, when people are too lazy to do their own research, which would take them all of about 10 minutes
