Hi All,
Friday's Show
As was mentioned, the Friday night show was cancelled last minute. This was a real blow for me, not only financially but emotionally; I really hate letting people down.
The problem was with the venue not providing correct information about the licenses that they hold. When booking the venue they should have stated any additional licenses or event notices needed. They did not mention any such additional requirements, even after being asked numerous times.
It turns out that the person who made the booking, should not have made the booking; therefore, it was not passed to the correct department in the venue. This meant that the information I was required to know about the licenses held was never given to me. This is even more shocking when you realise that the venue was booked some 7 months in advance.
As no license was held for the previous evening's performance, the authorities were informed that an unlicensed event had taken place and that another one may occur. I was then faced with the prospect of £20,000 fine or a 6 month prison stretch for performing without a license.
The venue, even though it was their fault, then refused to allow me to perform, as they would be seen as allowing an unlicensed performance to go ahead.
The really excellent (lashing of sarcasm here) part was that they informed me only 3 hours before the booked time.
I am really sorry to all those who turned up to the event only to find the show cancelled. My team and I made every attempt possible to call, e-mail and notify all of the ticket holders that we could.
A full refund is available from the website. Chris, I have e-mailed you personally as far as a refund is concerned due to the distance that you have travelled.
OK, on to Thursdays performance.
Thank you all for the kind words given; they are appreciated.
Numerous problems on the day meant that the set-up took longer than was needed and that created a backlash as far as rehearsal time and my pre-show relaxing time was concerned. A certain problem had meant that the start time had been delayed for nearly 30 minutes; this meant that I had to cut out certain spiel and subtleties that I had worked on with precision. This for me, is the same as taking a delicate Swiss timepiece, opening it up and replacing some of the cogs with inferior and rusty ones; it may still work, but it's just not the same.
I was very tense and stressed out when I walked out on stage, due to the non-stop activity, problem solving and delayed start time. Then I looked out to only a 65% full audience, even though the event had sold out and all money for those tickets had been collected; this was very confusing and a number of subtleties and effects had to be recreated and changed on the spot because of this.
Due to a myriad of stress and on the spot thinking I missed out a number of subtleties for the effects that I performed; as well as being time conscious due to the late start. This for me was very saddening, as I love to perform with subtleties in mind.
I tried to create a better feeling of pace and excitement within my presentation but I just had too much to think about to have my normal fun and smooth presentational style; again, very saddening on reflection.
Yes a great number of the lay people loved it, and I received a great deal of very positive e-mails; however, I know that I did not perform to the standard that I expect from myself.
Oh, someone mentioned the remembered number mistakes earlier; the fact that I mentioned that I would only have 1 mistake and go on to make 2 or 3, was deliberate. In the majority of people they will talk about this incongruence but then remember the massive scale of what was remembered. It also removes any idea of a trick, and makes the effect appear as a genuine memory feat.
So that is both days in a nutshell, I hope that I have managed to answer any questions that people may have had about the event.
I will be continuing this show in 2008 as planned and these two shows were the pilot for the 2008 tour. So I hope that I will see you at the next show, where I guarantee that it will not be cancelled last minute and that there will be no last minute performances.
With Kind Regards as Always,
-Paul
