"Plosive Sounds" and other Derren-isms

Postby DivinityMagic » May 17th, '07, 09:41

Plosive Sound: def - ""The plosive sound starts with a closure of the mouth and/or nose. The flow of air builds up and finally the closure is released, creating an explosion of air. The explosion of air creates a strong sound/pressure wave which some microphones can't deal with or cause the signal to overload or clip.

But plosive sounds are note created with all vowels and consonants. Try saying all letters from the alphabet and try to find the plosive sounds. You will find them easily if you remember that you need to find the letters that start with a burst of air. Plosive sounds can also not be maintained. Once you release the air the sound has ended. This makes the 'A' or any vowel not a plosive sound by definition.
""

My question is this, Derren does an effect (or many) when he gets a spectator ro think of a name or a word. but to say it over and over.He waits then says, Ah! plosive sound, then goes on to reveal letter by letter.

I am merely looking for advice onrecommended reading.
Only the right direction of pointing i must have. (Yoda Voice, hehe).

Ive read, Sleight of mind (Awsome), Derrens Pure Effect, Absolute Magic, Trick or Treat, Brad Hendersons "The Dance", to mention but a few, none of them focus on what im trying to grasp above.

Mr Mason suggests he has a similar effect for sale called "Think Pink" Combined with the Electronic Touch makes for a powerful effect.

Any advice would be grand.

Divinity.

I think there's probably sl(e)ightly more at play than looking or polsive sounds or other letters in the mouth as Derren makes out, but I could be wrong.
I'm presumnig by Trick or Treat you mean 'Tricks of the Mind' ?

Sorry, I can't really reccomend any books or anything, but simply compliment you on the work 'Derrenisms'. hehehe.

Wouldn't plosive sounds, by that definition, only include "b" and "p", with an exception perhaps for "m?"

I second the notion that there's most likely far more involved that plosive sounds, or lip reading of any sort, for that matter.

Let's imagine Derren aleady knows the word but has to cover up the fact he knows it and suggest an alternative far cleverer method ....
