Magic for the mentally handicapped?

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

Hi Rob,

Have you got or can you get your hands on a Foo Can? Kids love stuff with water and gags that include tipping a can of water over someones head (but the waster has "disappeared" of course) then pouring it out after goes down really well. It adds a slapstick element

I recently performed for a care home for people with special needs. I kept all the magic highly visual (chinese wands, sponge balls, chop cup, etc) and it went down really well (esp the Chinese sticks). Aftewards, one of the residents did a trick for everyone. The great thing was they were all dressed in Alice in Wonderland customes!

I did the gig this weekend, doing a 45-minute parlor-style show for an audience of 15 or so. It went suprisingly well, as the birthday girl was happy enough with the attention she was getting. I did some tricks that I hoped she would understand, but I geared the magic toward the audience and the attention to the birthday girl.

I posted a clip of the show in the File Sharing section if you're interested.

Thanks for the ideas,
Rob

Believe it or not I have done shows for childern that are mentally handicaped. I didnt do magic, I didnt use animals... but I performed... escapes.. They loved it. They were hands on and thought it was a blast. Even the parents loved it. They liked it so much they asked me back for next 2 years.

And I am glad your show went well... I had seen this earlier I would have put in some advice.
