Thumb Fan

Postby bpaul91 » May 28th, '07, 11:33

I'm really stuck with this...

Everytime I try to fan the cards about 20 cards get stuck on the fleshy part of the bottom of my thumb before I can fan all the way around. I have quite small hands so do you think this is the problem or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

Ben.

I used to have this problem. What i did was just kept practicing with the taught grip and the cards getting caught, then changing it bit by bit until it suited me, got a good fan and the cards didn't get stick. Its all about experimentation with these type of things as everyone is different.

Hope that helps

Sam

Thanks Sam.

I guess I'll just have to keep practicing then, however long it takes.

That is usually the case with most magic unfortunately but it gives you a much better feeling when you finally nail it. :D

Good Luck

I usually find that the tiniest of adjustments to my hands/fingers can make a big difference when learning sleights or flourishes.

Try using very small changes to the pressure your using and the positioning of your thumb. Even if you have to go very slow you can at least get the 'knack' of it then gradually speed up.

Can anybody please help me? I'm having terrible problems controlling my streetmagic- I can't walk down a street without turning into a pub.

Yeah, I've just found out by shifting the pack up slightly and gripping it right at the bottom allows me to fan the whole pack without it getting caught. Now just to make it an even spread... :D

Thanks guys

It's definitely a knacky kind of thing.. You just have to find the right position.. There is really no wrong way to hold a deck when fanning.

Oh yes there is.....With the thumb fan. Make sure the thumb of the hand holding the cards is in the corner of the cards this is the pivot point all so beveal the deck slightly before fanning. And Bob is your mums brother.

Wel.. Yes of course there is.. I was referring to it on a smaller scale... Same position, different angle sort of thing.

While we're on the subject...

Any tips on how to get an even spread? I can spread but i usually get left with a bundle of cards somewhere in the fan?

I find speed helps a small dusting of... What I mean is the quicker you do it the less chance the cards have to clump together.

I agree with Markdini that speed is a good way to get an even fan, but I've found another aspect of it. If you think "even fan", I've found that you will get a fan that is pretty even. I know this sounds weird but I guess you can get a good mentality about the process. If you think it, it will happen.

my fans are shoddy to say the least but i think a bit of sloppiness helps convince people that 'real' magic is happening rather than sleight of hand.
also i don't spend time practicing fans when i could be practicing something useful.
