Derren Brown-Missing Card

Postby Pyro Ellvelin » Jun 2nd, '07, 20:18

Has anyone else seen this? Basically Derren is with a woman. She picks a card and keeps it close to her. Derren then riffles through the pack so that he can see all of the faces. He is then able to name the missing card. Before the actual trick, he claimed to have learnt this with 1 suit, then 2 and so on until he could do it with the whole pack. If this is true, im working on that now, and not having much luck lol. Is this how its meant to be learnt or is there more to then what meets the eye? Help please :D

I'd be very wary of believing Derren's own explanations of what he does! I think you'll find there's trickery afoot...

I believe his explanation. I mean it's so easy to slow down time as you are riffling through the deck anyone can do it  :?

It's alarmingly simple, if you think about it. Just remember you're watching a TV show, not a live performance. Certain liberties can and will be taken with television productions.

Not only that, but Derren is admittedly a balls out conman of sorts

I think it's a little bit funny when people are thinking that Derren Brown is slowing down time in his mind, or making voodoo dolls in his basement. Derren Brown is a magician. He does what all magicians do but puts a little mentalist spin to them and he has people thinking he's memorizing entire decks of cards. I think the thing that makes DB so popular is his clever patter.

I do not know really how he do it. I tried to do the same thing. In the second time I tried, I actually got the right card, that was missing. After I have got same number a couple of times, like instead 8 of hearts, I thought the 8 of spades was missing. So who knows? Maybe it is easier that we think. Although, the times I did hit close and the the time I hit the right card I was -not- stressed to do it right, more relaxed state of mind. Letting all the cards riffles before my eyes and taking in all the influences of the cards. And somehow, you know, at least the number which card apparently is missing.

Well it could be just pure luck, or if not, I could be a poker player...

I think you mean Blackjack?

As for the video I'm pretty sure I know how its done and its a lot easier than slowing down your perception of time lol.

There is no slowing down of time. There is no voodoo. Like all good magic it is an old trick dressed up in new clothes. Just think about it. If you had to reproduce this trick and your life depended on it, how would you do it? The answer you come up with may not be the answer to how DB does it, but it will at least be an answer.

Derren has accomplished what most magicians can only dream of: his non-magic fans (as demonstrated by the posts on YouTube) genuinely believe he's performing these super-human feats for REAL. Any accusation of trickery or legerdemain is met with scorn and cries of "No! Derren doesn't cheat!"

The guy's a magician!

That's gotta be one of the most beautifully shot magic sequences i've ever seen.

There's many threads on Mr. Brown on here, obviously, and most of them are repeating the same thing (usually discussing his methods, red herrings...etc). And becoming tiresome now.

That's from series 3 i think, not out on DVD yet, oddly.
