What to buy?

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

I must aggree with Wills and Marvel. I went through a phase of buying gimmicky tricks, and although they get a good response, you can't do anything with them, they're just one trick, erm , tricks.
Also, for me, even with the tricks you have to practice endlessly, there's less satisfaction than with the ones that are less self working and seem impromptu.

I'm a fan of the DVD option myself, learning techniques as well as effects, so that you can create your own.

One of my favourite tricks requires no more than a borrowed ciragrette and is a quick vanish/reveal that a Polish bar man taught me. I've been practicing for 3 years now, and the reaction it gets in a bar is far better than any of my gimmicked tricks ever got.

My omni deck has sat in its box since Christmas 05. My Cultural Exchange and Osterling DVDs are almost worn through!

I have most recently discovered that I like to have the book AND DVD for techniques, but am fine with book alone for effects. The book tends to have much more content, tips and options, but I don't think you can beat a video presentation of a sleight to get it fixed in your mind.

Having said that, I've not got into mentalism DVDs, so I can't comment on their usefulness for presentation.
