Making A Layperson Vanish

Postby Michael Kras » Jul 4th, '07, 19:21

An old Paul Harris conversation with Eric Mead had Harris naming off a joke effect to get a laugh from Eric. This joke effect involved two spectators: One a stooge.

Both sould sit on stage and be covered head to toe with a very large sheet. While the spectator's vision is impaired momentarilt, the stooge will quietly leave the stage. Then, the magician whisks away both sheets (one left on chair by stooge) and acts like both people have vanished. The spectator will think she and the stooge are invisible! They can then reappear anyway you want.

This was published as a gag in the Art Of Astonishment books, but I actually think there is potential for a working effect here. Would any of you try this? Do you see potential? By some chance, have you tried this?

This all strikes up another interesting question: Can this be executed?

What do you all think? Your thoughts?

Michael;

Firstly, you are tipping a method (sort of) that isn't yours to tip. Secondly, you are trying (in desperation I believe) to seem more intelligent and important than your years or your experience. Problem is, you're still a kid, one without a huge amount of direction it would seem and one that seems to "need" special attention. I know those are seemingly harsh words but that is how you come across.

I applaud your enthusiasm and desire to learn, but you also need to learn how to be a bit more cautious in how you present a thought or, as in this instance, expose something that could prove a negative in how folks view you.

Now, as to your question... yes the technique works but no, it's not practical and it rarely fools folks. It would however, be a great gag within a show in a Paper Balls Over the Head sort of way.

I believe Gary Darwin in his INEXPENSIVE ILLUSIONS book touches on similar ideas that are far superior and more practical. Many of which have actually been used on stage by major players.

Ahh.. Yes, exposure. I see what you mean. I didn't consider it to be previously because it technically wasn't an effect in the books. But I believe you are correct.

I also understand what you mean by the routine. It could still have potential if it was pulled off correctly.
