scratching his head then secretly slipping it in?

way earlier in the day?

having it palmed than slipping it in then throwing it?
lots of possibilities

He couldn't have had my wallet long because I bought a slushy right there by where the magician was. Even if it wasn't a trick hat, I think that's an excellent idea. I'm gonna have to try and make one now.

Once you've got your magic hat all sorted out, you could try combining it with a white rabbit and make the rabbit appear out of nowhere and...wait a minute......

Unless you know a different method for doing the classic "rabbit out of a hat" than I do, it doesn't require any sort of trick hat.

The guy was wearing a regular baseball cap, but I'm guessing you could come up with a similar method for any style of hat. I'm trying to figure out how to make it work right now.

I know of no method of doing the rabbit out of a hat trick. I was just joking.

I imagine however that at some point in time a magician will have performed the rabbit from hat stunt using a gimmicked top hat. In fact I'd be bloomin' surprised to be told otherwise.

Most likely somebody, somewhere, some time did use a gimmick top hat. However I think I know the most accepted method of doing the trick and it doesn't require a gimmick hat. I think anyone would be hard pressed this day in age to think of a truely new method of doing just about any trick. We're all just playing on how these tricks have always been done.

so basically youre saying the hat could have had a false bottom?

Assuming that's how it was done, I would assume that the bottom (top?) of the hat was false. It wouldn't take much of a hole to slip a wallet through, and I never did examine the hat. Too big of a hole would be obvious, but if you take a slightly oversized baseball cap and cut a small hole in the top, who's going to notice?
NOTE: If the baseball cap fits too tight it will conform too much to your head and the hole may become more noticable in theory, but I've not gotten that far in making it yet.

aha
Ive made a sort of rough draft. I dont know if I would be allowed to post a picture here, but its quite tough to use. basically I c*****l a card to the t*p of the deck, then p**m it off, then sneak it into the false bottom. My next ones gonna have a flap. I just needed to find the dimensions for it

Have you tested it yet? Does it look real or can you tell it's a trick hat?
