I don’t think I will be going, as I realised at this years Bristol Magic Convention its people who make the events not the events themselves.

Last year I met up with some people from Magic Bunny and had a fantastic time this year I went on my own and it was rubbish, I left by 11:00am and did not even attend the paid for evening show.

.....well after leaving my granny in a cheap motel room bathroom surrounded by packs of ice and nursing a stitched up side I shall raise my hand and say yes to the Blackpool Lights.

Did you not go for VIP?
And what's the best accommodation around there. Do I need to book in advance, etc..etc...

Any info appreciated as I know nothing. :)

IMHO, based on previous visits, there's so much going on at the same time that choices have to be made and some things are going to be missed, The VIP idea adds extra events so more of the 'ordinary' events will have to be sacrificed and I couldn't get me head round paying for the extra events and missing more of the ones in the Gold Pass package. Preferential seating in the Opera House for the Saturday and Sunday shows is a plus point though.

As for accommodation, the Blackpool Tourist websites list a lot of very suitable and reasonably priced hotels and the Blackpool Magician's Club website indicates a few likely ones. If you work it right you'll only be kipping there for a few hours anyway  so no need to go for 'The Ritz' type hotels! Many hotels are closed for decorating or to give the owners time off so Google and phone until you get one you like the sound of which is open.

I've just realised. I might get to meet the real me. Apparently he was there last year, so you never know.

Thanks for that Mandrake. Might get VIP just in case. You never know :)
Is there a hotel or something where TMers favour based on past experience?

The Ruskin ( http://www.ruskinhotel.com/ ) is the official convention hotel where a lot of the 'names' and performers are stabled but it's always booked up years in advance. It's also, so I'm told, the scene of a lot of after show merriment involving consumption of obscene quantities of alcohol until just before breakfast time. Not that I would know anything about that sort of thing, you understand (hic, burp). It's in Albert Road and there are a lot of hotels in the same road which are ideal as it's only a 10 minute walk (or a 20 minute stagger) to/from the Winter Gardens. If you're travelling by car make sure there's parking space as many hotels don't have car parks, the roads are festooned with double yellow lines, and Traffic Wardens are in abundance. If any other members can advise and recommend hotels, perhaps we could accumulate a list of some kind?

The woman who runs that place is lovely, but she can't cook eggs, bless.

Yes 6am's will be fun again, and not so strange this time.

I wouldn't reccomend the Alviston. Its cheap, but it shows in the place itself. The bar is always full of hen parties and drunk scotsmen (non magicians). However, the bar is open as long as the landlord stays awake.

Unfortunately, he fell asleep pretty quickly.
Fortunately he fell asleep in the bar, leaving the bar itself open, with free drinks for all. :P

All the best,
Croz
