copywriting routines?

Postby majikbob » Jul 23rd, '07, 17:24

Hope I'm not being too demanding for a new member:

I'd love to know how patenting/copywriting of routines is achieved. If routines are legally distinct by their effect only, then you may be able to add one more move to an existing routine and get a copywrite. Even if the patent/copywrite depends on the mechanics also, it seems to me that you could modify somebody else's hard work for your own benefit.

Can anyone point me to some info?

If not I suppose i'll have to stop being selfish and share my inventions. There's just a few that i'd like my name to. Any suggestions?

If you get a Linking Ring Parade, they copyright it for free.

If you're American use that site, I would talk to a lawyer to work out how to copyright everything good in the routine, make sure everythings covered...

No, I was just showing what I did.... it's just an easy way. My apologies, I will go put on my Dunce Cap and sit in the corner now...

The last thing I want if for this thread to be about me.... I hate being the centre of attention, unless I am performing.

Copyrighting magic really doesnt do much. If it is on paper, it means people cant copy it word for word. But they can still take it, re-write it, and market it on their own. If it is exposed on the net, people can still learn it.

If on dvd or vhs, it just means people cant legally post parts of your video on the net or sell copies. But they can teach it in their own words in a vid.

Magic is greatly based on ethics; We just have to believe that people wont steal your effects. If thats what your afraid of.

To patent it, would mean your reveling the method to any one and every one.

thanks for your replies. Obviously, I don't expect any real legal advise.

I'm from UK and haven't ever been a part of a magic 'community' before. Performing was my main source of income for 3 years but I hid my talents when I went to university as i didn't want to be the center of attention.

4 years on, I've just started to practice again and am enthusiastic about writing routines as I do not have the energy/time to perform as a second job.

Where can I post my ideas for everyone, knowing that they may be an existing and copywrited trick that I haven't seen anywhere?

thank you 'david the cryptic', that makes sense.

It must be hard for magician's with all the bad performancies and explainations on you tube. Still, having classic effects exposed does inspire me to try to improve them.

I don't get copywriting magic.

It doesn't stop YouGays posting terrible explanations of the effect, I believe it would cost the person a fair amount to get it copyrighted, and any decent magician would steal an idea off somebody and market it as their own.
