My copy arrived yesterday and I'm not disappointed. Many thanks for the tip Mog - you're excused ruhberwear for the weekend as a reward. Unless it's raining in which case a Sou'wester & Wellies are OK.

I also ordered this after reading this thread, it arrived today, fantastic stuff.
I have a background in NLP and so was interested to see what was on offer here, very very good.
Thanks again.

I dont do metalism

Postby connor o'connor » Aug 28th, '06, 07:38

I DONT DO METALISM
well I do a very very tiny bit
I am a childrens entertainer and I bought this book.
WHY?
because quite simply this is a classic, It is beutifully written for a start, just the languge he uses makes it a joy to read. Mainly though it is his excelent explinations. He explains why he needs to do things a certain way and this helps the reader to train his mind as to how and why a magic trick needs to be presented in a certain and exact manner.
I have read this book perhaps 20 times from cover to cover and each time I get that one little thing that makes one of my tricks that little bit sharper.
So i don't look at this as a book on mentalism, but on a book that teaches and shows me the right attitude towads magic.
I would be interested if anyone else thinks of this book in the same way or am I just not getting enough sleep :?

13 Steps

Postby DrTodd » Sep 16th, '06, 15:57

This book is a treasure trove of insights, methods, and just down right clever stuff for any type of performer. I find something new in it every time I sit down with it. Found a great mental four aces trick in it today, modified with some insights from Dai Vernon and Jay Sankey and will add it to my performance. I cannot say enough good things about this book. It is up there with Royal Road and Bobo in my view. Should be in all our libraries!!!!

Which shouldn't really affect it's worth or put you off buying it...

Very true. As stated above, it's a treasure trove of tightly packed mental goodness.

This series of lessons came out long before Metal Bending was the new "flavor of the month" effect everyone wanted to exploit... back in the day when being a "Psychic" or "Mind Reader" meant just that, not all this Hollywood Poltry-gist type stuff.

BUT... I believe the compiled book came out around the same time several books came out on this topic like GELLERISM.

In fact, 13 Steps first came out as a single volume in 1961 and prevously as thirteen seperate lessons from ~1958, whereas Geller only hit the scene (first in the US the nthe UK) in the early 1970s. He was still an ex-soldier and photographic model until 1969 and only started performing in Israel night clubs that year. I wonder if he would have done so well with the "real thing" schtick if the dates had been reversed

I recall stories in my Weekly Reader (we're talking 4th grade elementary school 1967-68) about Geller and his "Miracles"

I didn't think Corinda was compiled under one cover until 71 myself... but I'm certainly no authority on that point.

Perhaps it was another Geller. Mind you, he's a slippery customer when it comes to the truth. Certainly 13 Steps was out as a single volume by 1961.

You and me both, mate!

It couldn't possibly contain half the material in the book though. 220 pages at 500 words/page is 110,000 words of tightly packed mentally goodness all for £16.
