James got through to the finals, but unfortunately wasn't placed.
Yes it was all rather strange! & I must admit, I was very dissapointed.
Incidentally what we are talking about is the Magic Circle Young Magician Of The Year Competition two years ago......
At that time, through the pages of Abra (The weekly Magic Magazine) I wrote several letters (which
were published) asking if anyone knew the
criteria for the voting, but NO ONE responded at all, & in the end Don Bevan (The then editor, pulled the plug on it).
I don't want to mention the winners, because I know at the time when I did, a couple of them were upset at my comments, whoever wins I am really pleased for them. I can totally accept someone not winning, or getting placed, BUT on the basis of what I
THOUGHT the criteria was for the voting, along with the fact that if I was WRONG absolutely
NO ONE were prepared to put me right & say what the criteria for the judges votes actually was!!!
Then in my opinion plus that of many others, James should have been placed.
If indeed (as I thought) the judges were supposed to award so many points for:
1
SKILL (then surely James should have scored high, because he is incredibly skillful)
2
APPEARANCE (Well he looks great, clean, smart & tidy, so should have scored high for that as well)
3
ROUTINING (His routining was /is SUPERB!)
4
CONTENT (well he certainly has plenty of that, & it's GREAT CONTENT)
5
MIME & DANCE (Again very very good) Obviously a Patter act would be marked for Patter, instead of Mime.
6
STAGE PRESENCE (Again he oozes that very special quality)
There may have been other things to add to the above that I THOUGHT were important at the time, but the main thing I thought was that the acts had to "Represent Excellence In Magic" which surely James did then & does now (after all, the winners are representing the Magic Circle!)
I have no idea on what basis the judges voted, or why they voted the way they did, but James didn't seem upset at all, he was just pleased as punch that he got through to the final! James said to me at the time "Who would have thought a couple of years ago, that I'd be here in the finals of the Young Magician Of The Year Competition at the Famous Magic Circle in London?"
James is such a nice person, an incredibly dedicated & talented performer, & that's why I am
BEGGING each & every one of you to give him your support in Bournemouth on the 26th August at the Carrington House Hotel, Knyveton Road, Bournemouth, Dorset BH1 3QQ .
I can think of no one more worthy than James.
"One thing's for sure, your gonna see more of JAMES MORE!"
Best wishes
Mike
