Card splitting - HELP!!

Postby ddathan » Aug 10th, '07, 13:43

Hi everyone

I recently purchased 'The Art of Card Splitting' by Martini, and i have had some trouble with making the cards. The actual splitting of the card is fine, it's when I'm gluing two parts together that i have difficulties. I live in the U.K. so when it said use rubber cement, the nearest i could find was copydex. However, this seams to make the card shrivel up when i applied it , and it also leaves the cards with little air bubbles.

Also i find that the newly made gaff cards are much less hard and stable as the normal bicycle cards, they are more bendy and too flexible.

Can anybody help me? Do you have any little tips as to making better gaff cards?

Thanks, Dominic.

Copydex is your problem. It's water based.

Rubber cement is spirit based.

Cards + water = bad.

Whoever told you that Copydex was 'like' rubber cement is completely inaccurate.

Use rubber cement, as recommending in Martini's video, and you're cooking on gas.

The next question will be where can rubber cement be found!

Or click here. It's about half way down the page (just past the flash products).

the cards are made up of three parts face, middle and back, if that makes sense. you need to make sure you've got all three parts in the gaffs you are making. so for example, if you are making a DB take the face off one, the back off another and put it on the the back that still has the middle attached to it. if you just use the two backs and have no middle card it will be thin and weak. hope this helps.

Or... sell your card splitting DVD (no, don't, I'm just trying to make a point...) and buy a pack of assorted gaff cards from NUMS. I tried my own card-splitting, and realised that some things just aren't worth the acid in your stomach

Correct!!

Thanks for the advice, i've bought some rubber cement and i'll see how that goes.

I still found the cards weaker even though i had put the thin card with the thick card. I'll see how it goes with rubber cement though.

Am I missing something or is life too short to be splitting cards to make your own gaffs? Surely you're better off just buying them? Unless you need a specific gaff card that can't be purchased, I don't see the point in making your own.

As far as buying them goes, if you need specific cards that are not readily available, I've heard nothing but good comments on Neil Lester's work. Any card that you want, he will make for you. You can contact him direct via his shop:

And magicbox sell a box of mixed fakes with the Barcode Revelation effect thrown in! About six quid if I remember rightly and you get a load of different ones.

Hi there, since this is a fairly old post I wondered if any of you experienced guys have any knowledge of splitting black cards? I've just picked up Martini's Art of Card Splitting but there's no mention of black cards, I'm deducing from the haircuts in the video that there probably weren't any in production back then.
Anyway my guess is that splitting a black card will probably leave a horrible white fading around the edging but I'm hoping one of you guys will tell me different. I would test it out myself but I've only got one deck of shadow masters at the moment and I don't really want to be one card short.
Hope to hear from you soon!

I've got to ask; if you're not planning on splitting your black cards then what's the problem?

A solution though, can be your friendly neighbourhood sharpie.

Oh I'll split them without remorse, It just means I'll have to get a few more in. I much prefer them over regular bikes, it's just that nearly all packet tricks and gaffs only come in bikes and the only way I see around this problem is to make my own. I'm liking the black sharpie idea though, might be a winner...
