The Magician's Dilemma

Postby donkeylord » Aug 16th, '07, 23:17

So I started magic just as a hobby to pass some of the summer hours with. Since then I have learned a little about all types of magic (ie coins, cards, mentalism etc.) I enjoy practicing and performing all types of magic. Now that I have a basic understanding of magic I have found that I want more from my magic. I'm not saying that I'm board with it or expect it to be real, but that I feel like I'm searching for the perfect effect.

The main pleasure that I get from magic is that if I can make my spectator really believe that what I did was "magic" I have given him/her something that I'm seeking.

Just wondering if this is a normal feeling among magicians, or if I'm off my rocker.

I think it is quite normal. I hear this quite a bit from people in your position. I remember the feeling myself. You probably understand the basics of the mechanics of magic but have yet to fully grasp the essence of magic despite the fact that you may think that you have. It is part of the learning curve. You are starting to examine what its all about. Soon you will hopefully come to realize that there is no 'perfect effect' because its not really about the trick, magic is the medium and what you have to learn is how to express yourself through this wonderful medium and once you can do that the effects you choose, create and perform can become quite personal and you will inevitably grow as an artist and then the magic will happen for you and your audience and that perfect effect will actually lie in the performance of an effect or routine and not the prop in your hand. I know sounds corny but if you give it time and keep up the work you will one day understand what I'm saying here.

Spectators are amused by the trick, but magicians know whats going on, so the trick isnt interesting to them, i feel I have to perform a trick for at least 5 people a week to remind myself that the reactions is what I practice months for.
