One of the big News Magazines here in the States just did a big article on this problem, it's actually referred to by Police as iTheft and has become one of the biggest trends they've seen in nearly a decade.

You might look up 20/20 on NBC I think it was... see if you can find the report.

Tip No.1... don't be chav-esque and display your iPod for all to see.

Tip No.2... don't wear Apple headphones... it's a giveaway.

I was lucky enough to be amongst the first in the UK (well, possibly the world) to have an iPod... I've been a long standing Apple fan, and was using MP3 files since before most people even knew what a CD was.

Anyhow, I was on the 'waiting list', and my first recollection of getting my iPod was "WOW—this is great, no huge Discman or anything to lug around and get STOLEN".

Yeah, that's right... I've had two CD-Walkmans stolen prior to getting the iPod. One was a lovely Sony rechargeable, the other was a Thompson Lyra MP3 CD player.

Now, those big things were hard to conceal. They were practically self-advertising.

So when I got my hands on the lovely new iPod—which could be concealed in an inside pocket—I was well chuffed. People would hardly know it was there (Yea, in those days, I was commuting a lot by train).

So, personally, it comes as no surprise that this has come full-circle. The peasants who desire what others have will always revert to stealing. And if you put temptation in their way, they will oblige and take what is rightfully yours.

I'm now on my 8th iPod, and I'm thankful that I've never had one stolen. But that's the beauty—mine's hidden away, with lovely Senheiser earbuds disguising the fact. In fact, the Senheisers were chosen to look like cheap earbuds so I stood less chance of being mugged for an expensive MP3 player.

It's so sad to hear you've had your iPod stolen. I'd be gutted if the same happened to me. Not only is there loads of music, but I keep work files, personal data and much more in that little 80Gb of Apple goodness. There's much to lose.

Assuming you reported it to the police, there are ways that your home insurance may cover it as a loss. If so, hold back getting a replacement for a while, as the all-new range of iPods is due out within a couple of months, and they are going to be even sexier and more 'essential' than ever!

Condolencies...

if that post was supposed to sound apologetic, it really wasnt. It seemed mean and as if you were just laughing at me. Im in Barcelona right now. They dont care about another stolen iPod. I had it out because my headphones (not apple) didnt fit in my pocket. I had turned it off and the iPod was on my chair. A guy bent down to show my sister that someone could steal her bag. When he left, I realized that my iPod was gone. I feel like an idiot though... Are you sure theyre coming out with new ones?
I figured the iPhone would serve that purpose
