Postby Dave 3 » Aug 24th, '07, 08:15

Hi all Being a novice at magic. I find it hard to do the DL am i right in thinking that roughing spray will help to do this.If yes is roughing spray all you can use as it seems a bit expensive i thought i read somewhere that hair gel works fine would this be right. Thanks Dave. :D

I cant see roughing spray being of any help with a D/L. The D/L is a fundamental of card magic, just put some time into practicing it as oppased to messing up a deck with sprays.

I agree with magic mark. There's not much point in messing up a deck of cards with sprays/gels when some rigorous practice will do the trick. Plus, I'm not sure of the practicality of such things, unless you intend to spray/ paste the whole deck in the stuff. What I mean is, is if you have to DL two cards from a shuffled deck, how will you spray them beforehand if you don't know which ones they'll be? As I'm sure you can tell, I don't use roughing spray so I don't know how it works...

EDIT I'm leaving you a link to a thread that I started some time ago asking for DL help, and there are some interesting suggestions here. Hope this helps. If all else fails, try PMing some of the members that replied to that thread as they might be able to help you out.

Hi Dave, as Mark says, the spray will be of little or no help for doing a DL. I know it can be a bit trickey to reliably DL at the beginning, but just stick with it. Greg Wilson (I think) has a DVD which discusses the DL in some detail. It's called Double Take. Now I have not seen it myself, but I have heard good things about it.

If you want a couple of quick tips, feel free to PM me.

Hair gel works fine for me everytime! I always get the 'wet and spiky' look and it holds all day without any problems.

As for using hair gel on cards well - I'm lost for words.

Just bought my first can of mat Spray AKA: Roughing spray and messed around with touching up some of my decks, etc.....has anyone had trouble with the cards curving (much like when they get wet) at first? I did a couple single cards and they curled a bit....one dry it was very easy to put them back into shape but just wanted to know if this is normal or am I applying too much spray?

I am assuming that it takes a little feel to get an understanding how much spray to use, how to apply it, etc...

If they curl then yes, you are spraying either too much or too closely. When the card dries, as you have discovered, you can easily flatten it again but you may find that you have a big patch on one or more cards.

Like most things magical, applying the spray is all about technique
